Generally, projects address issues that are typically found in pharmacovigilance or comparative effectiveness studies, for example: 1. Help develop an algorithm to identify bone metastases and skeletal-related events in an in-house electronic medical record (EMR) database. This would entail evaluation of available EMR clinic data (radiology), and working with an Amgen programmer and an external vendor to develop an abstraction algorithm that would lead to new, improved data requirements for clinics moving forward. As a secondary project, the intern could help develop a test/pilot epidemiology landscape for one tumor type that could be used as a template for a larger project. 2. Conduct or participate in statistical analyses using marginal structural models to adjust for time-varying confounding in comparing the incidence rate of fracture healing complications across osteoporosis medications. The intern will work with a group of epidemiologists (including an external collaborator from the Harvard School of Public Health), statisticians and programmers to conduct analyses using SAS according to an established study protocol using the MarketScan insurance claims database.
