As I mentioned in the meeting, you will find below the minutes.
First, the committee and me especially are here to support you. You don’t know what to say about
Jacari in your JCR meeting, you cannot bake, you can’t make your meeting with your charity rep
because you suddenly have an essay deadline, then email me and I’ll help you out. Really, do not
hesitate: that is what I am on the committee for!
Second, we would like college Reps to fulfil 3 main “missions” for Jacari
1. Recruitment
We still have 200 children in Oxford waiting to be paired up with a Jacari teacher.
We need to raise our number of volunteers by 100 % to get funding again next year. We now have
about 100 Jacari volunteers. We need 200 by the end of the year to be able to pay another
coordinator next year without which Jacari simply cannot work.
How?

Word of mouth: TALK about Jacari to your friends, your coursemates and your housemates.
Ex: last year in the end of a seminar with 12 other people, I stood up, asked for 2 minutes attention
and talked about Jacari.
Ex: join the facebook group Jacari, I’ll make you administrator and you can invite ALL the people you
know in Oxford. The worse that can happen is them ignoring the invite.

Posters and flyers: I gave you only a few. Post them in strategic places in your college. It
might be the computer room, the MCR, the toilet doors. You might have to ask the porters
before putting them up: there is no point of putting a flyer without asking the permission for

it if it gets removed 2 days later. I will try to get my hand on some more and will pidge them
to you. I know it is annoying to do and might seem useless sometimes, but it really makes a
difference: people will know Jacari, even if they don’t apply for it.
College Fairs: If your college is having a charity fair in Hilary, try to get a stall for Jacari. I will
come to help you and give you flyers, posters, a mailing list and some Christmas cards...
2. Fundraising



JCR money: there is always a way to get money from your JCR/MCR. Because this is Oxford
and nothing is centralised, the committee is not really sure about how each college works
regarding JCR money. In some colleges, you just get a motion through your JCR, in some
others there is a battle system. Your mission, if you accept it, is to find out about these
modalities, to let me know about it, and to apply for money.
Ball charity: Get your ball committee to choose Jacari as their charity. This means that any
extra money they make out of the ball, they give to us. The greatest thing of course would
actually to get them charge 50 p on each ticket for Jacari. What would be even more
amazing would be to get the Jacari logo on the ball ticket and posters. This is really worth
pursuing, especially if the theme of the Ball is something related to childhood, like Alice in
Wonderland or Peter Pan.
Cake sales: They work! A slight inconvenient is that they take time: baking, selling,
counting... That is why the committee is more than happy to help you with this. Tell us
when and where and we will bake. I will also come with you to sell the cakes. BUT we need
YOU as an insider to know where/when is the best place and date to do it: is it lunch or
dinner? At the bar? In the MCR? On Tuesday outside of this conference hat half the college
attends? Also, people would buy much more cake if they know the person selling them. This
is a proven fact!
We will discuss about more fundraising ideas in Hilary: these are the basics. But who knows, we
might organise a pool tournament in the Union in the beginning of Trinity!
3. Creating a Jacari Community spirit
This is the least hard working bit of your ‘job’ and one where you can really make a difference for
Jacari. Once you will have recruited hundreds of freshers in Michaelmas, it would be amazing if you
could have a quick chat with the Jacari volunteers of your college. Have a coffee and chat for 30
minutes about your kids, how she just cannot spell “wisdom” or the snowman he drew on his Xmas
card had giant ears. I will email you a list of the things we would like you to mention in these
meetings: the next volunteers’ social, advertise the library, remind them about the workshops and
the kids trip in London...
We would like you to have these meeting one to twice a term, starting in Hilary.

outside the college, where can you get a table for your cake sale...)

Enquire about any charity related event that is coming up (fairs, RAG week) where you could
promote Jacari
5. Get money from your JCR before the end of term. The standard amount we ask for is 200 £.
6. Send me an email to tell me how you are getting along with things. Listed are examples:
You think I am asking too much and your degree does not allow you to spend so much time
on Jacari
Your meeting with your charity rep went really well and you are going to go around with
buckets at your next Bop. You need help.
You could not get any money from your JCR because they have this weird constitution that
says that you have to apply for funds at the beginning of Michaelmas
