This year's Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference (SSLC) was another success, if not the best one yet. Shellbrook was the hosting school and they put on a phenomenal Hunger Games themed conference. The conference started on Wednesday, September 16th and we were greeted by food and many different activities when we arrived. Not too long after, everyone was separated into 20 Districts, just like in the novels. The next two days would consist of sessions full of challenges and activities that would win points for your district. There was a wide variety of sessions that you could attend; anything from “Finding your True Colours” to discovering your blood type; You could go learn some country dancing or practice your improv skills. There were also some sessions that everyone attended. We listened to Theo Fleury and Ishmael Beah tell their stories of hardships that they went through and how to deal with challenges that might arise in our schools and lives. Thursday evening we had a formal “Capitol” banquet and foam dance where everyone had an amazing time! We looked like wet dogs by the end of it, but it was all worth it! When Friday rolled around everyone was pretty tired, but that’s when the real Hunger Games took place. Everyone was shipped to the golf course for one final chance at getting points for your district. The winning district led the parade down main street and that brought SSLC to a close. This conference was jam packed with activities and thought provoking speakers, and we can’t wait to attend next year’s SSLC in Maple Creek!
