2. Minutes of the Last Meeting
(a) Agreement of Minutes
• The minutes from the last meeting September 2011 were agreed to be
correct and accurate.
(b) Matters Arising
•
•
There has been no raise in the stipends and teaching/demonstration money
from university this year.
MSc students like to teach or demonstrate laboratories as a part-time job to
help their expenses.
3. Academic Matters
•
First year research plan and 2nd, 3rd year progress reports deadline was by the end
of week 3 (20 October)
•
In 2010/2011 the stipend money was raised at the beginning of the academic year
unlike this year and there is not much that students can do about it to ask for the
raise in the stipends or teaching rates.
•
There is no chance for M.Sc. students to involve in teaching undergraduates at
physics department. Considering the fee they have to pay for their degree and
living cost it might be worth thinking about changing the policy although there
are sufficient number of PhD students to take the positions in labs and classes.

New Warwick login for e-journals has been rolled out by the library to improve
security of access to electronic resources. The new system seems to be working
and no further complains were received regarding the access. The followings are

4. Events
Social Events:
• Physics Induction day on 3rd October was successful and alcoholic drinks
and snacks were served to welcome new PG students.
• First PG-seminars held on 13th October was in the physics common room
with a few problems with the projector but nearly 50 PG students turned
out which made the seminar a success.
• It has been asked by the member of staff to tidy up after the seminar as it’s
not cleaners’ duty to clean the common room’s kitchen. PG seminar’s
coordinator should ask students to help before they leave.
