Smith Spectacular November 6, 2015 We had a great time celebrating our Coin Drive success. We surpassed our goal of 250lbs. of coins so students earned an extra recess. Thanks to volunteers, special stations were set up for student to use. (Chalk, parachute, ball games, etc.) It was a fun time for all. Thank you PIE for organizing the volunteers and games! Thank you to the community for donating to our coin drive! Please remember that any bus changes need to be in writing. If you have a change come up during the day, you need to call the office by 1:30. For the safety of every student, we cannot guarantee that changes made after 1:30 will be honored. Conferences are scheduled for Monday, 27pm and Tuesday, 12-4. If you do not know when your conference is scheduled, or know you will not be able to make it, please call the office at 223-4282. Childcare will be provided during your conference time in the Smith School Library if you need it. Please help us win a garden! Vote for the Leroy H. Smith School at http://bit.ly/1iPUGxj Or visit the terracycle website. You can vote one time each day. All it takes is a few minutes! We are in SECOND place. Please help us win!! First graders have been busy this year learning about a variety of topics in Health, Science and Social Studies, including: apples, and the life of Johnny Appleseed, personal safety and community helpers, keeping our bodies healthy, and bats. We will soon be studying important parts of the human body, and Thanksgiving. We have been using charts to record information that we already know about a topic, and the new information that we have learned throughout our studies. We have also been using Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast information. Ask your first grader to explain how a Venn Diagram works! Students have been, of course, very eager to share the knowledge that they bring to our discussions! They are also excited to share the new information that they have learned. So, please ask a first grader you know to tell you something that they learned about Johnny Appleseed, keeping our bodies healthy and safe, or amazing bats! First graders have been working hard to build reading and writing skills in the River Wing! We began by learning how to build stamina as we read, choose Just Right books, and practice new skills in workshop stations. Now, we are learning about using strategies to help tackle tricky words: looking at the picture and sounding out are some we know! Since we study 5 new words sight words each week, we can read over 40 new words, too! As writers we have learned about two different genres, narrative and informational, by writing Small Moment stories and How To Books! A slice of Pie! (Partners in Education) PIE’s Fall Fundraiser Coin Drive has come to a close and the results are in! Congratulations, Smith School Students...you exceeded our school-wide goal again this year! Working together, you collected 277 pounds of coins! The total amount of funds raised was $1084.52! All grade levels enjoyed “Fall Fundraiser Fun Day” on Friday, November 6th as a reward for their efforts. A fun morning took place with an extra recess including many fun outdoor games and activities. Your contributions helped to raise money that will directly benefit Smith School. Thank you for your participation and support with this fundraiser! Thank you to everyone who came out to support PIE at our Halloween Monster Mash event. We hope you all had a “spook- tacular” time! PIE is selling Smith School T-shirts and sweatshirts. Order forms were sent home in backpacks, but additional forms are available to print from our website at www.smithpie.webs.com. We will also be offering Smith School car magnets for $5 each. Magnet order forms will go home next week and are also available on our website. Orders for shirts and magnets will be placed on the second Friday of every month. Show your Smith School spirit with a shirt or a magnet! Smith School students participated in a school-wide vote on Election Day. They voted to choose the two movies that will play at PIE’s Holiday Movie night on Friday, Dec. 11. We are counting ballots and the results will be announced soon! π The grade-level Box Top contest came to a close and FIRST GRADE was the grade level with the most Box Tops! Congratulations, first graders! All grade levels did a great job turning in Box Tops to help raise money for Smith School. Thank you for your participation!
