Smith Spectacular October 16, 2016 Smith School Student Showcase: We hope you can join us on Thursday, October 22 for a Smith School Student Showcase. This will be a time for you to pop into your child’s classroom anytime between 6 and 7. Examples of student work will be on display, as well as activities they do in the classroom. Smith School Showcase is a student-led event where your child leads you through his/her work and shows activities in his/her classroom. Since this evening is for you and your child to share his/her work, Smith School Student Showcase will not be a conference time. Parent teacher conferences will be held Monday, November 9 between 2-7 and Tuesday, November 10 between 12-4. Sign ups will be available at the Smith School Student Showcase. We will also have childcare available during these times. Recess reminder: We have an extra, start-your-day-off-right, morning recess for the month of October. K-2 students go outside once the busses arrive on Monday and Wednesday, and 3rd and 4th go outside on Tuesday and Thursday. We will keep this up for a few more weeks while the weather cooperates. Scholastic Book Fair: The book fair was a success. We earned just a fraction less than last year, and have been able to purchase about $1000 worth of Scholastic books to be featured in the library in the coming months for all students and staff. Look for a BOGO book fair in May at the library! Kindergarten Performance: Mark your calendars! The entire kindergarten will be performing at our next All School Meeting on Friday, October 30 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Please join us! In kindergarten this month we are working on counting to 20 and beyond, number recognition, patterns, 10 frames, graphing data, and playing games using dice. In literacy we are practicing upper and lower case letter recognition and letter sounds, learning and practicing sight words, using songs and poems to practice rhyming, and attending to stories during read aloud. We also began our Switcheroo groups. Students go to different small groups to work on targeted instruction. Our groups include alphabet recognition, letter sounds, phonemic awareness (how letter sounds work), and sight words. In health, we are learning all about the 5 senses. And be sure to check out the lobby display of seasonal kindergarten artwork. Wow, have we been busy!! October is Fire Safety month. Please be sure to practice fire drills at home (including having a place to meet) and check those smoke detectors to be sure that they are in good working order! A slice of Pie! (Partners in Education) PIE’s Fall Fundraiser Coin Drive is happening now and runs until Oct. 30th. All Smith School students are working together to try to reach the school-wide goal of collecting 250 pounds of coins! Students will be rewarded for their efforts with a “Fall Fundraiser Fun Day” during the morning of Friday, November 6th. This will be a fun-filled morning of outdoor games and activities! Keep those coins rolling in and thank you for your support with this fundraiser! Mark your calendars for PIE’s annual Halloween Monster Mash on Saturday, Sept. 24th from 12:302:30. Come in costume and enjoy some Halloween games and trick-or-treating down the Haunted Hallway. Immediately following the Halloween Monster Mash, you can head on over to the Rec Department’s Fall Festival taking place on the Smith School playground. It should be an afternoon full of fun! PIE is currently accepting trick-ortreating donations for the Halloween Monster Mash. You can send any contributions in to the school before Friday, Oct. 23rd. We appreciate your donations for this fun event! PIE is selling Smith School T-shirts and Sweatshirts. Look for order forms coming home in the next few weeks with prices and ordering information. Starting on November 13th, PIE will place shirt orders on the 2nd Friday of every month. Order forms will also be available to print off on our website at www.smithpie.webs.com. Grandparents’ Day photos have been sent home in student’s backpacks. PIE would like to thank Mariko Brown, Ben Isenhour, and Bill Drake for volunteering their time and photography skills for this special event! The first Box Top Grade-Level contest of the school year has come to a close. We are busy counting Box Tops and will announce the grade-level winner soon. The grade level to turn in the most Box Tops will earn a fabulous prize! The next Box Top Grade-Level contest begins NOW! Keep clipping and donating Box Tops to help raise money for Smith School!
