Giraffes Weekly Information Sheet 25th January 2015 Literacy We are starting our next traditional tale, “The Gingerbread Man”. We will be retelling the story orally using actions and we will be sequencing the main events using pictures and adding labels. We will talk about the plot and characters too. We are also continuing to practise correct letter formation. To help at home: Read and practise retelling the story and have fun acting it out. Make a list and bring it in! Practise reading simple words using these graphemes, adding the sound buttons. Look on our Foundation Stage phonics page (Phase 3) for words and sentences to read. Use www.phonicsplay.co.uk for some free games in the Phase 3 section. ‘Picnic on Pluto’, ‘Dragon’s Den’ and ‘Buried Treasure’ are games which involve reading words and non-words to decide if they are real or fake. Reading non-words is a great way of making sure children are sounding out using their phonic knowledge. It is also important to keep practising Phase 2 words so try the games in Phase 2 as well. Have you tried the Bug Club books yet? Maths - teen numbers This week we will be working on numbers 11 to 20; counting and estimating objects to 20 and reading and writing the numbers, with correct number formation. We will be revising numbers to 10 if appropriate. To help at home: Count out groups of objects to 20 accurately. Use the number flashcards that were sent home to practise quick recall. Mix them up and show them, how quickly can your child say the number? If your child is not confident with numbers to 10 yet practise them first. Put the numbers in order or pick 4 random numbers out and put them in order from smallest to largest. Practise writing numbers. Play “Quick Numbers” - say a number, how quickly can your child write it? Look on www.topmarks.co.uk (click on ‘learning games’ tab) for lots of games.
