Tests will generally be announced at least one week prior to test date and a study guide will be made available beforehand. Most study guides take the form of a simulation of the test and MUST be completed by students as preparation for the test. There are fewer tests than quizzes so students are recommended to study appropriately or their grade will suffer.
Quizzes will generally be announced before the quiz date, though occasional pop quizzes with no prior warning may be given as well. Both oral and written quizzes are used for assessment of student proficiency and progress.
This refers to all of the graded oral work that takes place during class time. The oral work may include dialogs, class presentations and quizzes. The criteria for grading oral work include the following 4 factors which will be discussed and explained during the first few weeks of class:
Fluency
Pronunciation
Vocabulary Usage
Accuracy
Participation is made up of the following components:
Active contribution during class
Requests for help outside of class if necessary
Preparedness for class
General behavior in class and towards classmates and teacher
Italian homework it is NOT busy work, but rather an effective learning tool for all students. Those who both do homework regularly and pay attenti on in class don’t need to cram for assessments, while also building a strong foundation. Homework will be checked or collected at the teacher’s discretion. Individual homework assignments do not usually receive a grade – instead students get full credit just for doing the homework (independent of how many right answers they have), but points taken off for not doing it. All students are permitted to come to class without their homework twice during each marking period with no penalty; when, however, they don
’t do homework for the
3 rd time, their homework grade goes down. The only exception to this is all study guide/simulation assignments – if a student does not do one of these then they automatically lose points immediately towards their final homework grade. Students start out the marking period with a 100% average for homework so as long as they don’t miss more than two assignments in a marking period, they are guaranteed that grade (which, counting 10% of their grade, can often make a big difference).
