Math Department Disclosure 2015 – 2016 Instructor: Miss Jennifer Ord Course Goals: Master math skills previously learned Build a solid foundation for future math learning Practice problem solving skills, to challenge students to discover and achieve through increased creativity, rigor, inquiry, and reflection, and to develop a positive attitude toward mathematics Preparation: Students are to bring the following to class EVERY day: pencil, paper, assignments, math book, calculator, math dictionary, and school planner. Coming to class unprepared will affect your citizenship. Tardies: Students are to be in their assigned seat when the bell rings otherwise they will be considered tardy. Homework Policy: Homework and/or in-class assignments will be given almost every day and will be due at the beginning of class on the following day unless otherwise stated. Homework will be checked at the beginning of class. In order to get full credit, students must show their work and complete the assignment. Homework should be done in pencil and have the date, class period, and student’s first and last name on each assignment. It should be neat and easily read by the teacher. Students with an excused absence are responsible to find out what the missing assignments were and turn in within 3 days. Tests/Quizzes/Exit Slips: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter in the textbook. As with homework, students must show their work and give explanations when needed to receive full credit. Quizzes will be given as needed. Students with an excused absence are responsible to find out if they missed a test/quiz and make arrangements with the teacher to make it up within 3 days. Students can recover credit by correcting ALL mistakes on a test before doing a test retake. Students can retake the test multiple times as long as they fix all their mistakes on all previous tests. All test retakes need to be done within a two week time period. Students can use any resource to rework the tests, but retakes must be done on a specific day with a math teacher. Students will be able to rework and retake all assessments with the above conditions. Exit slips will be twice weekly and be similar to problems already worked in class. They will be worth 5 points, and will be 2-3 problems. Late Work: Late work will only be accepted until the test day on the same unit. Students will receive 1.5 points out of 2 for completed late assignments. Incomplete work, at least 50% completed, will receive 1 out of the 2 points. Students who are absent, of course, will be responsible to find out what was assigned and will have three days for each excused absence to make up the work. Dictionary/Notes: The student’s composition notebook will be used as their Math Dictionary & Note Taking Guide. It should remain in the classroom. As the students learn new vocabulary or formulas in class it will be their responsibility to write down this information. Students will hand in their dictionary when called for by the teacher for credit. Please keep it up to date. Students can use their dictionary on exit slips, quizzes, and tests. Cheating: I take cheating very seriously. Anyone caught cheating will be given a zero for the test, quiz, exit slip, or homework. Parents will also be notified of anyone caught cheating. Cheating will result in a U for citizenship. Math Help: If a student needs extra help, math teachers will be available before and after school. Students can also get help during Advisory Flex time on Tuesday – Thursday.
