Agenda: Introduction (5 minutes) Bacteriological water quality analyses results for Darfur & eastern States (Sector coordination) (15 minutes) 2014 world water day planning (10 minutes) Introduction to IWRM (15 minutes) Southern Sudanese refugees situation & WASH responses (10 minutes) 3 Ws Matrix update (10 minutes) AOB (5 minutes) WASH Bulletin Agenda Item 2- Bacteriolo gical water quality analyses results for Darfur & eastern States Discussion/Decisions Sector Coordination team presented a summary of water quality data analyses as below: Summary: 5,360 Total Samples analyzed by WHO & MOH, Samples collected from Gadarif, Kassala, North Darfur, South Darfur, East Darfur, West Darfur & Central Darfur, from different sources including hand pumps, open dug wells, hand dug wells, storage, water stations, surface water sources, water vendors , donkey carts , during the period of 2011 to 2013 . Overall situation 66% of analyzed samples show contamination of E coli, contamination level increased during rainy season (June), high percentage of contamination in the surface water & unprotected sources, further analyses & verification needed from Implementing partners to identify the root causes of contamination. More analyses & linkage with SHHS & S3M results also will provide more clarity about this results. Action - - To Formulate water quality technical working group. April Agenda Item 3- 2014 world water day planning 4- Introduction to IWRM 5- Southern Sudanese refugees situation & WASH responses Discussion/Decisions UNICEF presented brief presentation for 2014 world water day celebration under the national theme “Saving Water Saving Energy” not to forget to mention global theme “Water & Energy” Objectives: - Raise awareness of the inter-linkages between water and energy - Contribute to a policy dialogue that focuses on the broad range of issues related to the water and energy. - Demonstrate, through case studies, to decision makers in the energy sector and the water domain that integrated approaches and solutions to water-energy issues can achieve greater economic and social impacts. - Identify policy formulation and capacity development issues in which the UN system, in particular UN-Water and UN-Energy, can offer significant contributions - Identify key stakeholders in the water-energy and actively engaging them in further developing the water-energy linkages UNEP IWRM focal point presented introduction for IWRM approach as the following highlights: Definition: IWRM is a process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. Pillars: - Moving towards enabling environment of appropriate policies, strategies and legislation. - Putting in place the institutional framework (through which policies can be implemented). - Setting up the management instruments required by these institutions to do their job Also the presentation includes principles critical elements to enable success of IWRM. Another presentation for the role of WASH partners in IWRM will be following. According to UNHCR figures total number of Southern Sudanese refugees increased to 40,000 individual, distributed in west Kordofan , blue Nile and the Bulk in White Nile (19,070 indi.) In white Nile WES/UNICEF 7 Plan continue providing daily water supply through tinkering of 240 cubic meter on daily bases in Elgia & Kilo 10 (about 12.5 LCD) , 98 communal latrines constructed , WHO support MOH to organize clean-up campaigns, SRCS distributed 970 water Jericans (20 litter each) & conducted 18 hygiene awareness sessions in collaboration with Eithar (NNGO). Plan & SRCS utilizing the normal program funding for this responses. The issue of water quality and using of rough river water were raised in the meeting & implementing partners requested to insure safety of water supply & proper chlorination. Action Responsible Status/ Deadline - Partners to - encourage sub offices to participate in WWD celebration. WES will organize national event in collaboration with UNICEF, UNESCO & sponsorship of minister f water resources & energy on 24th of March. NA Implementing partners to share weekly response update 3Ws - All WASH Partners NA WASH Partners responding to Southern Sudanese refugees asap NA Each Thursday Agenda Item 6- 3 Ws Matrix update 7- AOB Discussion/Decisions Action Responsible Status/ Deadline Sector coordination team presented the last WWWs matrix update for WASH sector which includes only update from ZOA, SIDO, SC,ADRA & TEARFUND, and agreed to have quarter update from sector partners. All partners to submit WWWs update All WASH partners 15th March 2014 WASH Bulletin: Coordination team proposed to have regular WASH Bulletin to reflect Sector Achievements, Lesson Learned, Success Stories/Innovations & WASH events. Partners agreed to have quarterly WASH Bulletin & to include challenges in topics. Emergency in South & North Darfur: WES request partners to strengthen efforts to respond to new emergency in Elsalam locality in South Darfur (about 50,000 indiv.) and in Northern localities of North Darfur state (about 300,000 indiv.)
