ST. CHARLES ART GUILD MEETINGS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2015 1ST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH FROM SEPTEMBER UNTIL MAY President’s Message Laurie Abadie “Why do you try to understand art? Do you try to understand the song of a bird?” Pablo Picasso. Your visual piece is a story. It condenses your memory, your sensations, your message, your soul, all in one glance. Scary, sometimes, always rewarding, always a learning experience. Several of us were amazed with the spiritual, soul-searching art left by a mason-by-trade in Chauvin, LA, along Bayou Terrebonne. We did just what Picasso told us not to do, and then decided to enjoy it not for interpretation, but for the marvel of the task that he had accomplished. Created with cement and reinforced steel, Kenny Hill had turned his mental visions into a garden full of thought provoking sculptures that are being carefully preserved by the Kohler Co. and Nicholls State University. It seemed to be something that he “just had” to do. You know that feeling. Remember to bring your own latest work to our “Artists of the Month” table December 1st. Having a full November table was so much fun! December 1st?! Yikes! The meeting is so close! Get the information in the Christmas Pot-Luck Article. It was a very nice day. Second, we will be going to Laura Plantation on Dec. 8th to tour the plantation and then to paint, sketch, or take pictures. We will meet at the plantation no later than 10:30 am. The plantation is on the River Road in Vacherie. If you cross the Veteran's Memorial Bridge and then take a left at River Road, a little ways up you will come upon the plantation on your left. We will tour the house at 10:40, which takes about 1 1/2 hours. Then they will show us where we can set up to paint. If you'd like to walk the grounds to take pictures you are welcome to as long as you don't get in the way of a tour. The cost is $20 and everyone who has been there said it is well worth the price. If you cross the Veteran's Memorial bridge in Gramercy over to the west bank and then take a left at River Road, a little ways up you will come upon Laura Plantation on your left.
