Welcome to new board trustee Dave McDermott.
Members acknowledged heartfelt gratitude to Shirley Bingham who is resigning the board. Happily
Shirley will continue to be a friendly and solid support to the library as she continues as a volunteer.
Librarian’s Report
Summer Reading-positive response so far to the summer program “Dig into Reading”. Carolyn
visited all the Folsom classrooms to spread information and it seems to have paid off. Grand Isle
and North Hero Libraries have been invited to join in on the many events scheduled at our library
for the Summer Reading Program. Carolyn will also advertise events in the July issue of “Kids VT”.
Book Sale-is scheduled for July 27th. If the weather is nice the plan is to set up in front of the school
for maximum visibility. Volunteers will be needed.
Website- Carolyn has added a Facebook page and trustees are encouraged to “like” the page and
invite friends to join. Carolyn has added reference link databases to the FB page and plans to add
them to the website. The website is becoming a “goldmine” of information.
Inventory-Nancy Crowley has offered to do inventory for the library this summer, it was last done in
2004. Carolyn will borrow/be gifted a scanner from Williston Library to use for this purpose.
VLA Conference-Carolyn attended and reported that useful information gained was: the idea of
adding alternative collections to the library such as seeds/bakeware/garden tools. Another was
creating subject sections and color coding for the children’s picture book collection eg.
firetrucks/princess/animals rather than organizing by author. Carolyn also attended an “RDA
Bootcamp” which stands for Resource Description and Access. RDA is a new standard adopted by the
Library of Congress. This will likely affect our library since our current software cannot comply with
the new standards and so RDA will need to be taken into consideration as we go forward with
updates to our software.
Old Business
Policy changes/updates “Request for Reconsideration/Challenged Materials” rewrite by Carolyn accepted by the
board and will be added under the “Selection of Materials” portion of manual. Carolyn
created a patron form re: reconsidered/challenged materials which was accepted and will be
added to the end of policy manual. There will be copies at the circulation desk where other
forms are kept.

The Library Bill of Rights may be added to the policy manual, there was no conclusion
during today’s meeting.

Behavioral policy-it was agreed that it was not necessary to create because Folsom School
mandates behavior within the building and therefore the library. One issue in the past has
been kids waiting for afterschool events spending time in the library unsupervised, in the
past school year Folsom ran homework clubs to fill this time for kids.

Homecard-no changes to the homecard wording, patrons will need to inquire at the front
desk if they would like a homecard e.g. a library card with the appropriate number code.
Homecards will be listed in the policy manual under “Inter-library Loan”. It was mentioned
that the homecard is quicker and less expensive for libraries that using the mail to request
inter-library loans.

Computer use policy-Diana and Carolyn will create wording for computer use policy to
include: no eating/drinking around computers and possibly adding a sign up time sheet and
time limit especially during the busy summer season. They will email Ken the wording.
July 4th Float Ideas
The South Hero theme for the parade is “The Bounty of the Islands” and the library summer reading
theme is “Dig into Reading”. It was agreed to combine themes into “Dig into the Bounty of
Reading” or something along these lines. Shirley will redo the banner to read “Dig into Reading”.
Board members agreed to create a float for the parade which has a construction theme, e.g. an
excavator bucket filled with books or actual excavators to ride in the parade. Board members will
contact folks who have excavators and see if there are one or two we can borrow.
Author Talk-Gesine Bullock-Prado is scheduled to do the author talk on Wednesday, July 17th at
7pm.
Donated books-Available board members will meet on Saturday June 15th to pick up a large
collection of donated books from Burlington. More boxes are needed and Carolyn will inquire at
Keeler’s Bay Variety for boxes.
Annual Brochure-Diana will work with Carolyn on the annual brochure to show her the ropes.
Meeting adjourned at 5:45pm
Respectfully submitted by Jessica Valin
