Madison County’s Promise IMPACT August 16, 2011 6:30p.m.- Church on the Rock, Oneida, NY Present: Linda Boylan (Believers Chapel), Tina Louis (Youth Bureau), Barb Malbouf (St. Paul’s) Julie Hengst (BRiDGES/Resurrection Life Fellowship), Faith Musachio (Church on the Rock), Diane Musachio (Believers Chapel), Jeff Leahey (Church on the Rock), Todd Slabaugh (New Life Christian) Tom Burgess (Hope Christian Fellowship), Sean Jeffrey (Believers Chapel), Sarah Johnson (MCP) I. II. Minutes were reviewed and accepted October 9th Youth Event at the Oneida Recreation Center a. The age range for the event will be youth in grades 7-12 b. The time of the event has changed from 1-5 to 3-8. Set up will begin at 1:00p.m. and youth will arrive at 3:00p.m. i. The Oneida Recreation center was booked on 8/17/11 by Pastor Jeff Leahey from Church on the rock. c. Youth will be given wrist bands when they enter the event i. Tina has a request into the Oneida Health Center for donated hospital wrist bands. ii. Once the youth are in the event they cannot leave until they are ready to leave for good. iii. Youth will need a permission slip and photo release to be allowed in- the permission slip and photo release will be on one sheet (parents can grant permission for their youth to attend the event, but can decline to allow them to have their pictures taken for publicity reasons). iv. Church youth pastors who bring their youth groups will be expected to stay at the Oneida Recreation Center with their youth groups for the event. d. Registration i. Sarah will be in charge of registration for the event and Tina will help while Sarah is out in September and will help work the registration table at the beginning of the event as well. e. Security i. Jeff is going to talk with the Church on the Rock security team to see if they would be willing to donate their time to run security for this event. They are professionally trained security guards. f. Activities for youth i. We have broken the activities into four different areas 1. Teen Room- this room will have video games and other smaller scale activities. Linda and Diane will head up this room. We will also ask Ruth if she would like to help with this room since she did it for the 2008 event. 2. Gym- the gym will be split in half with some sport activity being played on each half. Faith and Sean will be in charge of the gym. They are going to recruit several more members of their churches to help out in the gym. 3. Team Work Activities- Tina, Julie, and Barb will work on creating different team building activities for youth to participate in. This will most likely be housed in the gym as well. 4. Food/Refreshments a. Melissa King will be in charge of the food aspect of this event. She is going to work on securing food donations from local companies. i. The food station will most likely run from 3:00p.m. 6:00p.m. ii. Each youth will get a certain amount of food the day of the event- we most likely will use tickets to determine this piece. iii. Youth will need to stay in the dining area of the Oneida Recreation Center while they are eating- no food or drink will be allowed out of this area. 5. Focusing Event a. During the last hour or so there will be a focusing event that will have some worship involved for the youth. The message will most likely be something along the lines of making healthy positive choices with your life. Linda and Diane talked about a short 3-5 minute skit that some of their youth put on for the church regarding giving into vices. The group liked the idea of having this skit lead into a talk on positive Choices. i. Julie mentioned that Joseph Wicks from BRiDGES and Resurrection Life Fellowship may be able to speak with the youth. 1. Sarah spoke with Joe on 8/17/11- unfortunately he is unable to commit himself to that day and time right now. 2. Jeff Leahey has volunteered to preach to the youth after the skit. 3. There will also be some worship music played most likely via acoustic instruments. 6. Youth groups to invite a. All church youth groups in the county b. Oneida Kids Club c. Jesus Street d. CAP Mentoring Program (youth that are in the appropriate age range). e. YMCA teen youth program 7. Youth Organization to invite a. Reality Check b. 4H c. SWAT (?) d. YMCA 8. Sarah will create the invitations for the youth group and the youth organizations. She will send these to Tina who will send them out and be the contact for anyone wishing to sign up as Sarah will not be available for most of September. III. IV. V. VI. Networking Dinner a. The next networking Dinner is scheduled for October 18th. i. The group has decided to postpone this dinner until November 15th Future Meetings a. Joanne Eddy from the Youth Bureau has offered to present the Teen Assessment Project data to the IMPACT group at a future meeting. This presentation take roughly one hour, we will look at having Joanne come to January’s meeting to present this information. b. Gretchen Slater from BRiDGES would like to provide her Current Trends in substance abuse training to the IMPACT group. We will look at possibly bringing her in to do this presentation for November’s Networking Dinner. Chair Update a. Unfortunately Jeff’s Chair term is coming to an end. On December 31st, 2011 Jeff will need to step down as Chair of IMPACT as he has fulfilled his 2 two year terms as stated in the Madison County’s Promise by-laws. We are looking for someone to step up and take over as Chair for IMPACT. Jeff can stay on as a co-chair and mentor the new Chair. He can also assume responsibility of being full Chair in one year. Announcements a. Linda and Diane will be doing the Good News Club for the 7th and 8th grades this year at Canastota High School. They have five people that are helping them with this club and it will be held every Thursday starting in October and running through May. The 4th -6th grades Good News club will still be running every Wednesday October through May after school. They are always looking for more help with this group. b. Crop Walk- The Oneida Crop walk will take place on Sunday Oct. 16th. Registration starts at 1:30p.m. and the walk begins at 2:00p.m. from the 1st Presbyterian Church in Oneida. i. The Canastota Crop walk will also be Oct. 16th and will leave from St. Agathas in Canastota at 1:30p.m. with registration starting at 1:00p.m. There will be two stops one at the Opportunity Shop and the other at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen. 25% of the proceeds raised from the Crop Walk stay local. c. St. Paul’s Plant a Row Community Garden is looking for volunteers on Tuesday nights at 6:00p.m. for weeding and general maintenance of the garden. They will need more volunteers when harvesting season comes around. All of the food grown will be donated to the Salvation Army. Feel free to call Candy Crayton at (315) 813-3052 for more information. d. The Living Well Partnership is working its National Food Day initiative. This year they are looking to provide healthy foods to families. A flyer will be released soon asking those who donate to local food pantries to improve the health content of the food they donate i.e. less processed food. These flyers will be distributed to area churches in the next month or so. There next meeting is August 30th at 9:30a.m. at CAP in Canastota if you would like to join the cause. e. Safe Pill Drop Off- Sarah passed around flyers for the September 24th Safe Pill Drop Off Event. The event is being held at the Madison County Landfill at 6663 Buyea Road in the Town of Lincoln from 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m. Please bring any and all waste medications, we take controlled substances and sharps (these need to be in the red biohazard containers- they are available at your local pharmacy, f. Hope Christian Fellowship will be holding a 5 week parenting class starting September 15th-October 13th each Thursday. Each class will last 1.5 hours. Wendy Pidkaminy from VII. Syracuse University will be conducting the trainings. Wendy has written a book on parenting and has her MSW. Please contact Tom Burgess for more information. There will be a flyer soon with more information. This event is free. g. Strengthening Families Program will be running September 15th – October 20th from 5:30 -8:00p.m. at the Oneida Public Library. This is a family program for families with youth ages 10-14. Dinner is provided and families eat together then youth and parents separate for an hour and learn important techniques and skills. They then come back together for the last hour and work on the newly learned techniques and skills. This is free – to register call BRiDGES at 697-3947. h. BRiDGES will be holding a Recovery Walk on Saturday September 24th starting at 11:00a.m. at the Great Swamp Conservancy in Canastota. This walk will celebrate all those in recovery. All are welcome to attend and walk- Maxwell House will be providing lunch for everyone after the walk. For more information please call BRiDGES at 6973947. i. Church on the Rock will be participating in a back to school give away at the First Presbyterian Church in Chittenango. Parents will be able to get some necessary supplies for their children at this event and it is being held August 24, 25, 26, 27. Linda received a donation of 50 pairs of flip flops this summer and is donating them to Euganda as they are in desperate need of flip flops. Schedule for next meeting a. The next meeting will be Thursday September 8, 2011 at 6:30p.m. at Believers Chapel in Canastota- This will be a planning meeting for the October 9th Oneida Recreation Center Youth Event. b. We will also be meeting on Tuesday September 20th at 6:30p.m to continue planning the event. The location is still being determined.
