Literary Essay for “William aka Bill” In the story, “William aka Bill”, by Tanya Sousa, the narrator talks about a boy in her class who changes from a bully to a friend. The theme in this story is that people can change. Early in the story, the teacher gave William (the Bully) the opportunity to change his name to Bill. When the teacher called out “Bill”, the other students were caught off guard. He went by William and others knew him as “William, the bully”. William said he “hated William”. This showed that the boy wanted to change. He recognized himself as a bully and didn’t want to be that person anymore. Later in the story, the teacher started to give Bill responsibilities like passing out papers Bill began to participate in class. After a while he was raising his hand in confidence. This showed that Bill followed through with changing. Finally, after Mr. sandy talked to bill about his leadership abilities, he became a leader rather than a tyrant-controlling the playground. He helped a student learn how to properly swing a bat. He also helped that same student when they broke their nose. This shows that Bill was being a leader and helping. In conclusion, William aka Bill changed from being a bully to being a friend. When people are given the opportunity to change, they will most likely take advantage of that chance. In the world, people should treat others the way that they want to be treated. Key: Theme Transitions This showed-relating the evidence back to the theme Connection to self or world
