Cell Parts, Function and Comparison
Instructor: Julie Clarkston
Subject: Biology (9th Grade)
Class Time: 58 minutes
Objectives:



The student will become more familiar with both cell parts and their functions.
The student will be able to determine which cell types have which parts.
The student will be able to give characteristics of living things and why some particles are not considered living
Standards: (using Michigan Department of Education standards)
L2.p1A - Distinguish between living and nonliving systems. (prerequisite)
L2.p1D - Explain how the systems in a multicellular organism work together to support the organism. (prerequisite)
B2.4h - Describe the structures of viruses and bacteria.
B2.4i - Recognize that while viruses lack cellular structure, they have the genetic material to invade living cells.
B2.5B - Explain how major systems and processes work together in animals and plants, including relationships between organelles, cells, tissues, organs,
organ systems, and organisms. Relate these to molecular functions.
Procedure:
5 minutes – Focus Question: What are eukaryotes? (question subject to change)



Question on the board at beginning of class, students write down on September focus question sheet and keep in
notebook.
Take attendance
Call on student using cards to answer question/have students write correct answer
10-15 minutes – Practice Cell Quiz #1



Time given to students to fill in by memory and then by their notes.
Give reminder that 2 more practices will be given with final quiz for points on Friday.
Call on students using cards to answer parts of the cell.
10-15 minutes – Cells vs Cells


Call on students using cards to determine 8 characteristics of living things
Call on students using cards to determine if ‘cell type’ have those characteristics
20 minutes – Cell Organelles Structure Function Chart


Fill in the blanks chart where well will discuss functions of different cell organelles.
Call on students using cards to determine which cell types have these each organelle.
Buffer of 5-10 minutes in lesson plan to supplement extra time where needed. If finished too early, we will begin the fill in microscope parts on p.33 in binder.
Materials:






Biology Binder/Pencil or Pen
September Focus Question Sheet (in binder)
Cell Quiz Practice Sheet #1 (in reference section of binder)
Cells vs Cells chart (p.28 in binder notes)
Cell Organelles Structure Function Chart (p.29 in binder notes)
If time permits: Microscope Packet (p.33 in binder notes)
Evaluation:
Formative: Students ability to answer questions when call upon by cold call technique (see technique 22 from Doug
Lemov’s Teach Like A Champion Field Guide) using cards with students names on them.
Summative: Cell Parts Quiz scheduled for Friday, October 3rd and test over cells (TBD)
