Syllabus for Ph.D. Coursework
The Ph.D. Coursework consists of four papers each carrying 100 marks. The details regarding syllabus,
evaluation pattern and submission reports are given below.
Paper – I
(100 marks): Research Methodology, Theoretical prospective and up-gradation of domain
knowledge in the concerned field
Paper – II (100 marks): Application of Research Methodology including computer application
Paper – III (100 marks): Review of Literature
Paper – IV (100 marks): Research proposal presentation by the candidate before the SRC.
PAPER – I
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY, THEORETICAL PROSPECTIVE AND UP-GRADATION OF
DOMAIN KNOWLEDGE IN THE CONCERNED FIELD
Unit I: Scientific Research: meaning and nature of science; characteristics, types of methods. Nature of social
phenomena approaches to study of social phenomena. Ethics of social research
Unit II: Problem formation and selection of research topic, sources of selecting research topics, types of variable
and their selection, Research objectives, purpose and types of research questions and characteristics,
types of hypothesis, formulation of hypothesis, testing of hypothesis
Unit III: Meaning of Research Design, Types of Research design, advantages of designing research, stages for
outlining a research proposal, planning for good research project.
Unit IV: Purposes and principles of Sampling, types of Sampling and Sample Size, qualitative and quantitative
approaches, Principles of PRA and FRA techniques.
PAPER – II
APPLICATION OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY INCLUDING COMPUTER APPLICATION
Unit I: Methods and techniques of data collection: Sources (Primary and Secondary), schedule and
questionnaire, observation, interview, Group Discussion and key-informant interview, case study,
survey, content analysis and projective techniques.
Unit II: Data processing and analysis: data processing and distribution, tabulation of data, diagrammatic
representation, statistical manipulation of data: Frequency of distribution, measures of central tendency,
measures of dispersion, comparison, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and chi-square test.
Unit III: Computer application: Basic studies in computer
Unit IV: Computer Application: SPSS
PAPER – III
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
The candidates are to undertake reference collection and library work relating to their topics of research in
different Libraries of the Department, Institute or University within or outside the state.
 Finding the literature: Types, searching skill, etc.
 Managing the Literature: Keeping track, annotating, summary and critical comments
 Using Literature: Exploring a topic, developing research question, articulating a rationale and designing
method.
 Formal Literature Review: Purpose, coverage, the writing process, style and tone
PAPER – IV
DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL AND SYNOPSIS PRESENTATION
The students are required to submit their research proposals in the format below for presentation.
