PRODUCT DESIGN
AS and A2 Level
Sixth Form
Where do I start from?
Along with the school’s minimum entry
requirements, you will need a grade “B” in
Design Technology and “B” in English. A
firm interest in Product Design or related
industries will also be required.
What will I study?
Unit 1: Materials, Components and
Application. Written Exam, 2 hours
50% of total AS marks, 25% of total A
Level marks.
Three sections:
• Section 1 contains compulsory limited
response questions.
• Section 2 offers a choice of one question
from two.
• Section 3 contains one compulsory
question.
Unit 2: Coursework
Coursework, approx 50 hours 50% of total
AS marks, 25% of total A Level marks.
Written (or electronic) design portfolio
Revised Candidate Record Form and
manufactured outcome(s).
Coursework may take a number of forms;
a single design-and-make project, two
smaller projects and/ or a portfolio of
work.
Unit 3: Design and Manufacture Written
Exam, 2 hours 25% of total A Level marks
Synoptic unit.
Consisting of two sections with a choice of
three questions from six Candidates are
required to answer one question from
each section and also a final question
from either section.
This written paper will include sufficient
synoptic
assessment
to
test
the
candidates’
understanding
of
the
connections
between
the
different
elements of the subject and their holistic
understanding of the subject.
Unit 4: Coursework
Coursework, approx 60 hours
25% of total A Level marks
Written (or electronic) design folder.
Revised Candidate Record Form and
manufactured outcome(s).
Candidates submit evidence of a single,
substantial designing and making activity.
How will I be assessed?
There are termly assessments and internal
examinations throughout the course.
There are external examinations in the AS
units at the end of Year 12 and for A2 at
the end of Year 13.
The coursework will be regularly
monitored and assessed and will require
the meeting of interim and final deadlines.
How will I study?
You need to be able to work
independently and in teams, adhere to
strict deadlines and have the desire to
achieve high quality outcomes in all
aspects of work. You must have a keen
interest in design and technological issues
and be motivated to develop CAD and
CAM skills.
What does the subject combine well
with?
The Product Design Advanced Level
subject will develop a wide range of
transferable skills that can be used in
many other subjects.
