Often the discussion turns to what they don’t like about one person or another. This has been true in every national election I’ve seen, but I don’t remember a time when dissatisfaction with the choices was higher and the temptation to stand on the sidelines was stronger. Well, that’s not a viable option. In a democracy, the highest public office is a citizen with the right to vote. Our privileges come with civic responsibilities, including the moral duty to participate. But how can we sort through the rhetoric, rumors, and allegations to make a wise and responsible choice? First, we have to become informed. Claims that “I really don’t know much about candidate X” are not acceptable. We can’t hide behind a veil of ignorance, especially in the era of the Internet where it’s so easy to learn all we need to know. Surely, we should put as much effort into choosing our next president as we would in choosing our next car. The harder challenge is weighing and balancing the factors we think are important and making a comparative judgment among the contenders. It helps me to be systematic and assess each candidate’s strengths and deficiencies in three areas: • Convictions. What is his or her ideology and beliefs about issues of consequence? • Competence. What is his or her ability to effectively implement stated strategies and to deal with the crisis potential of unanticipated events, from natural disasters to foreign assassinations? • Character. Can this person be trusted to represent the country with honor, integrity, courage, and dignity? This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts. 5 IMPORTANT WEBSITES ANTELOPE VALLEY CHAPTER WEBSITE (since 2004): http://intranet.ncmahq.org/antelopevalley/default.aspx SOUTH WEST REGION WEBSITE: http://intranet.ncmahq.org/southwestregion HQ NCMA WEBSITE: http://www.ncmahq.org and http://www.ContractManagementJobs.com FAR VIEW Newsletter: http://intranet.ncmahq.org/calpolypomona/Chapter%20Newsletters/Forms/AllItems.aspx AV Chapter Officers’ & Committee Chairs Chapter Officers for Program Year 07-08 President Karen Zang, AFFTC Vice President Kim Rabatin, AFFTC Secretary Lucy Castel, AFFTC Treasurer Cheryl Avon, AFFTC Elect Officers for Program Year 08-09 President Betty Ellis, AFFTC Vice President Roberta Ross, AFFTC/PKX Secretary Leonila Marcelino, AFFTC Treasurer Cheryl Avon, AFFTC Annual Chapter Report Annual Education Conference Chair Arrangements Bylaws (Update) Certification Program Chapter Awards Directory Educational Assistance/Scholarship Fellow Fund raising Historian Membership/Chapter Welcome Newsletter Editor Nominations/Elections Private Organization/Insurance (EAFB) Programs/Speakers, Monthly Meetings Publicity Small Business Outreach Webpage Administrator Workshops World Congress Karen Zang/Kim Rabatin Jeff Veselenak/Diane Dolci/Betty Ellis Willie Martin Marvel Lavy/Karen Zang/Jeff Veselenak Leonila Marcelino Betty Ellis Roberta Ross Lucy Castel Karen Zang Cheryl Avon/Diane Dolci/Leonila Marcelino Kim Rabatin Roberta Ross Jennifer Hill Dwight Franke Willie Martin Cheryl Avon Roberta Ross Janis Smets Marvell Lavy Lucy Castel/Thania Guillen Diane Dolci/Cheryl Avon/Kim Rabatin 6 National Contract Management (N.C.M.A) Antelope Valley Chapter No.27 PO Box 6431 Lancaster, CA 93539-6431 Dated Material Newsletter Editor: Jennifer Hill, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, (661) 572-5486 AV Chapter Website http://intranet.ncmahq.org/antelopevalley/default.aspx 7
