Online Student Survey – Responses to Open-ended Questions 1. What suggestions do you have for improving online classes at Chabot? 2. What do you most like about online classes at Chabot? (starts on page 18) What suggestions do you have for improving online classes at Chabot? When a student has an online class instructors should give the students the opportunity to do the discussion board or not. I feel having the discussion board gives the students more work to do along with the other assignments they have in the same course plus other assignments that need to be completed that is why students take on-line courses to give them an easier alternative but lately these online course are too demanding. Discussion boards should not be part of the grading process. Put the lectures online. I think its perfect I have nothing to add being able to post pictures It would be nice to have more interesting materials or activities rather than just answering questions on blackboard all the time. None really. It’s up to the student to manage time. I'd like instructors to participate in discussion boards. Simply because sometimes I feel that students do not answer questions with complete accuracy. So I think it is important for teachers to participate so we can learn the information better. Also, I like it how some instructors have their whole class set up for the semester, so students can do their assignments ahead of time if time permits them to. -Have more online classes. -Have more activities at online. No suggestions for online classes itself. Some instructors need to have a clear expectations and deadlines. more announcements and alerts on when the assignments are due Less discussion board replies to student posts. Some on-line do not give us the student the flexibility to see missed text question so we can at least know what we got wrong. improving the web design... Give first choice to those who can't take classes at the campus on the discussion board, the instructor and student should have time allotted to discuss subject in real time. faster responsiveness from instructors for it to be more user friendly to vista software The on line classes require so much more reading. ON campus requires less time. Online classes sometimes require me to read and work 7 days. This makes it hard when I have other class work. The Blackboard system needs to be less flexible. It would be nice if more instructors labeled their syllabus and grading policies in a standard location. (Specifically, I like the way that Prof. Tong has her courses set up.) Some instructors label, some do not and others attach downloads that take time and memory on my computer. I wish there were more classes available on line, so that you could actually be able to complete some degrees through on line studying. A set schedule The only thing I can say that would be better is offering more classes online. offer more online classes maybe less homework assignment, instead of turning homework each week why not we turn it in every other week. Having everything organize and easy to access. I wish there were more online classes available. Please add more online classes. I think it's better if Chabot offer a hybrid classes from each online class 50% on campus and 50% online. Because for some people especially me, I don’t really prefer on-line class but I don’t have choice because the class was only offer online. To have more classes available online Keep blackboard working! organized homework assignments, work graded quickly so that no misunderstanding about work, students should receive responses from instructors about questions. Set a time... I Really like the online classes at Chabot and think it’s very fair with having at least a week to do each assignment so I don't have any suggestions. make more classes on line like Mass comm classes need to have more math classes that are full time online not half in class and half online. keep them flexible Allowing more time for posts- not everyone can study at the same pace. Maybe access to examples of what we are learning. More classes Maybe eliminate some discussions required from the blackboard. More online classes to be offered. More materials for our online classes to help us complete the assignments or exams. Conduct a quiz on the syllabus on the grading criteria at the beginning of the class. expect response on tech support. Tools that students used like me not quite as comp. literate this assistance in order to do homework and have the interaction and non interruption connection w/ class discussions and announcements by the instructor. I am fairly new to this and it is early on in the semester to evaluate and think f improvements. So far the class seems fine. less tests offer more online classes. I would like to see more classes added (variety of hours) and a possible virtual online setup. Quick response from support desk and instructors To get more on-line classes. More of them...I do not understand why math classes cannot be offered online...we still have to execute the math in order to get correct answers. Only those who do the math could pass the exams anyway. That the instructors "simplify" the course instructions for some students have not taken classes before. Some instructors do VERY well at making "clear" expectations. would like to have more lectures on mp3 more time on the deadlines for assignments make easier to get into blackboard I believe the instructor has done a really good job. The only suggestion that I might have is a little more time to complete the projects. It is difficult to find the time for everything that I do. Momentarily, I do not have any instructions. online classes are meant to help the student succeed and progress. they should not be harder than on-campus courses to "justify" not having to actually go to class. they should always be flexible. I have trouble with deadlines, maybe email reminders for online classes because on campus their constantly reminding us but online its harder Having a system that automatically sends updates to your personal e-mail when the instructor post something new/ The course materials, how the main page for the courses are set up are somewhat confusing and being that they are set up differently for each course, sometimes it’s hard to find. Some of the course materials aren't put on the syllabus/course materials. Also, some new students to the online classes may be left behind because some assignments are started before the actual date of the beginning class. I like both classes equally the only difference is that it depends on the person. if you cannot push yourself to meet deadlines and stuff take an on campus course. You will be reminders at least twice a week First off blackboard needs a LOT of work. Especially with how it is set up to make it easier to use, especially with how some teachers set it up. Some teachers I had in particular were very big on the idea of using several links, pictures not set up to scale, and different colors and font sizes in various parts of the page which made it hard to tell what was important and what wasn’t. And most times it would have various useless information that cluttered it up so we had difficulty knowing what tasks we needed to complete that week. So it would be nice if the teachers were taught to keep things simple and don't overdue it in a web page, just because they can make the page look "pretty" because often times it becomes nearly unusable. It usually takes me 10+ minutes to tell what is my homework assignment on a single webpage every week, while I have had other teachers who kept it simple and I was able to find out what I needed to do in a quick glance at the page. It would also be nice to have things such as edit buttons in the reply in the discussion board. As well as an EXACT time in which is stuff is due that automatically shows up next to the assailments due, such as quizzes. And when I say exact I don't mean for it to say Due Saturday 2/16, I mean due Saturday 2/16 11:59 pm, so there is no confusion on whether it means the end of that day or at midnight Saturday the second that day starts. I think Chabot online classes programs are good enough Well...I guess just make sure the teachers who do the on line classes communicate with the students. I have had on line teachers in the past who wrote back to my emails in a very short and almost annoyed manor. Not Cartwright. He is great. But I have had some who could be better at communicating with their students. I think the online classes are great. For the most part I have not had any problems or anything that needs improvement. Sometimes it is hard to get used to each instructors individual style of teaching but that is true with any class online or on campus. A few ideas for improving our schools online learning would be to provide more classes online. This could make school a less stressful part of our lives, because online classes are a more relaxing system because students can learn in their homes. Also, making blackboard an even simpler system and available 24/7. So far so good, no improvements I can think of. MORE TIME FOR READING make all the reading material available right from the site. that you should only have to check in once a week instead of twice a week. The instructors being available for office hours. Make more classes available. Specially math and science classes. There is not reason that a science class can't be tough on line and simply have online lab. I think when students register for online classes fro the first time, they should get an email saying what are the things you have to do to get started. That’s what messed me up because I had no idea what to do. Chabot needs more online classes for the working adult. Its very hard to attend on campus courses especially if working full time and having kids to watch after getting home...they need help w/homework, dinner and bath in the evening...need courses like online econ class, more online math and english..mainly the general ed classes. Open up more of a variety of online classes. I wish the instructors would not have so many classes, so they take the time to respond back to my inquiries. It seems to me when teaching an online class they don't interact with or respond to the students. making sure that the assignments are formatted correctly so students can type in them. I think more discussions about the material should be required. I think a lot of people slack off on reading and understanding the class text books because there's no instructor watching over us. I've taken 9 online classes and 3 of the classes I didn't learn anything. I know it's my responsibility, but I focused more on other classes because it was so easy just to take the test every week without reading a single page. By the way I received A's in all three classes. One more thing, I would offer a few online biology classes. I have no clue how I’ll be able to take a biology on campus class, because they require to much time Make the discussion Board optional; Let our grades show the instructor that we are getting it. The discussion board is pointless and just one more time consuming step. I wish all the teachers would post all the homework in advance as sometimes we have to travel and we have to do our homework in advance and sometimes we can't because some teachers don't post their homework in advance. maybe the website could be a little bit easier, it took me a while to figure it out. The one thing that I would suggest is to have some sort of set up to send a broadcast email out to all the students in the class to ask them for suggestions or make comments about the class. I have not seen that option on blackboard. It is only discussions only on the topic. Make page more user friendly. Let all the assignments be in one place so you don’t skip any. It needs to be organized so when you look at it you can easily find what you need to do. No suggestions. I think the Chabot online classes are perfect for all kinds of students. Provide easy links related to the course and teachers must comment back if students have questions. More interaction by instructors and students. I would suggest that the teachers of online courses not change the due date times. If an assignment or an exam is due on the 15th it should be available until 12 midnight on that day. Having it due by 3 in the afternoon when some of us work is just not fair. Then when the time isn’t obviously posted you miss a test that you have studied for and lose points...MAJOR BUMMER!! It would be easier for those of us who are taking multiple online classes. can't think of any suggestions right now. except maybe offer more course subjects for on-line classes. I don't like the fact that we have to participate in the discussion board and carry on conversations, as we have enough work to complete, especially if we are taking more than one class it gets to be cumbersome that we have to participate in discussion boards. I think discussion boards should be optional instead of mandatory. I think most people just go through the motions and leave a comment, but rarely go back to see what others have said in response to their comments. maybe meeting with teacher once a week for any questions. I think that most of the instructors have it down to a science. But there are some that repeat the same information of the course in to many places and it sometimes makes it to difficult to piece the information together because it is to spread out and you can sometime miss an assignment and some they add assignment changes in mid stream of the assignments. Most note the start date and end dates of each assignment and some only note the start date without stating the end date just stating this assignment is due in a week and then you find at the end of that week 7 days was not the end on the 7th day but on the 5th day and then the next assignment you think is due in the 5th day is actually due in the 7th day and you rush to complete and you haven't done a good job to your own standards. I have no problems with anything The online instructors seem to give you more work. It's as if they believe they need to make up for the time you're not spending on campus plus assign additional work. Defeating the purpose of wanting to save time by not going to the campus. On campus class instructions are also assigning a lot of work to be done online, which is equally annoying, again defeating the purpose of taking an on campus class. Provide more classes to take online. Our classes are limited, and it encourages other students to leave elsewhere. To capture the population of pupils you must be able to provide a wide selection of course. More feedback from instructor. Online you never know if the instructor actually reads you posts and don't get feed back from your written work all you receive is the grade book with the point value. nothing at this time.....it works great for me!!! As a working parent a wider selection of online classes would be great. I think it is important to make sure that all teachers are interactive with their online classes to assure students can count on them for help. Discussion forums- be easier on students and give full credit for participation. Some of us (like me) are not native English speakers so we can not write as well as native speakers, although we are able to learn and retain the material very well. My concern is that the points for Discussion forums can significantly lower the grade. We should NOT be graded on discussion board participation when there's a deadline. The reason why a lot of people take online classes is to be able to study when we want. A lot of people don't post questions that we have to respond to on time...or they wait until the last minute. I personally don't have the time to sit and wait until the due date to post my responses. There are very few people who post early...it just seems unfair. The system is working for me; I really have been very comfortable with the process. Thank you the software, some windows such as: windows vista is horrible for blackboard and has given me nothing but PROBLEMS! since vista does not comply with most software. offer more online classes easier access to instructors longer time frames for turning in work everything is good as it is. Have more on-line classes available. Please provide more variety. Add more classes to the online lineup. Add more science and speech online classes that are CSU and UC transferable. more lectures, power-point, etc. More time to finish assignments. Make blackboard easier to use and understand. Standard and logical structure to Blackboard for ALL online classes. Offer more of them...space work evenly through the week (instructor understanding that we work during the day, and many of us have more than one class at night, so weekends are when most of the work can be done). less emphasis on participation points/grades. more focus on the core subject instead of having people to read most people's post on the discussion board. people learn by listening and reading (both can be at the same time) but with online classes, you can only learn by reading and it takes more time that way because one avenue of learning is cutoff...... This is my first time taking an online course. So far I do like it. For the time being online courses fit my lifestyle. I do prefer to be in an actual classroom though. have more online classes If we could see the photos of our instructor and classmates, will be much better. I am confused when instructors use a syllabus, course modules and calendar pace. I believe that all of these things are about the same, but most instructors do not tie each option into the others. Less overlapping of assignments in one class. have the system set up the students email accounts automatically Sometimes things really come up and not being able to go back and complete assignments after I've missed certain deadlines is frustrating. Let there be an orientation before the class begins with the instructor so that they can answer any questions the students might have. It’s easier to ask questions in person. Stop asking for so many extra contributions such as these, I take online classes because I don't have a lot of time on my hands for campus meetings and requiring extra surveys just adds to the workload...if anything, don't make them mandatory. I think that just like on campus classes there should be some extra credit opportunity unless it's just the instructors personal choice not to give it out. So far, it is going good considering this is my first online class. video uploads. I don't like the peer reviews of the online classes The only thing I find kind of confusing about online courses is how all the instructors use different headers to find course materials/information. Some instructors don't explain what they want well, and it can cause you to get a bad grade. I think teachers should give chapter overviews in terms that students would understand. This is because the books are not always as helpful as us students would like them to be. Sometimes it's hard to learn a whole subject out of a book with little lecture from an instructor. Get rid of the discussion board. It's a waste of time to have people discuss the same thing over and over again. Just use it for questions and answers less discussion boards, but more tests Vista compatibility Well, for some reason I can't use Blackboard on Internet Explorer, but I can use it on Mozilla. My laptop didn't have Mozilla at first so it was hard to log onto Blackboard. nothing really. the online classes I am taking on the blackboard is fairly easy for me to find things and do my work and that is the most important thing Inform some of your teachers that the reason we are taking these classes is because we don’t have the time to take them on campus. The work load should be comparable to a MW or TR class, not a class that is M-F assignments that are due everyday by 12pm does NOT help the student who already is short on time To give more time to students who are taking online classes for the first time. So far I do not know since I have not found any challenge as yet. I don't have any suggestions for improving online classes. The online classes I have taken have always met my need-convenient but challenging. The syllabus should be available at least 2 weeks before the class begins I would like a way for blackboard to be able to tally how many times I've logged on and also tally up how many posts I have submitted in the discussion forums. I think there should be more online classes offered since Chabot has a lot going on campus and classes are full. I think that the school should give teachers a PDA so that they can answer students’ emails right away without going back to their office. Offer more online classes. None, I think the professors have nailed it. Add more classes! Offer more Math Classes on-line and possibly some Science Classes. Instructors having assignments and due dates that you can understand. My current instructor always just says "at the end of the week" and various statements making it HARD to understand the DUE date. His syllabus is also quite confusing. He also posted a statement saying "due Saturday" at the beginning of the course so I assumed that meant this Saturday. Well, turns out I had another full week and rushed through my assignment for nothing. It is great and easy so don’t have any other suggestions. I think there should be more classes available online. Classes that are non-traditional such as Algebra (this could be a hybrid), and more science courses. to offer more classes online The more organization, the better! I hate the blackboard discussion with other students. Better instructions for the classes and not to repeat instructions in several places - this can confuse students very easily. Have more online classes available for other classes for those that are not able to attend Discussion board takes too much time for me. On campus student no required to discuss their opinions if they don’t want to. That makes on campus class easer. I think discussion board shouldn’t affect the grad for the class. We should, as class, spend one or two activities together to share cultural opinions. N/A. As I said earlier, this is my first online course and my online instructor is very structured. The course expectations/workload is equivalent to what I expect from a comparable unit course on campus. Find textbooks that are less expensive and/or downloadable. Making the menu more similar from class to class. I spend a lot of time the first few weeks trying to figure out where teachers put what. I think the classes are set up very well and very easy to follow. Once you learn the site its great to have the material available 24 hours a day. I personally don't see any reason for improvement. I do not feel it is necessary to have to ask redundant questions in a forum, just for the sake of asking them. Being required to ask questions of other students, or comment on their answers is a waste of time to me It would be easier to have all online classes that we are enrolled in listed in the Courses section at the beginning of the term, regardless of the start date. The individual class webpage does not need to be active since the class has not yet started...just a list so that way we know we will have access when class does start and have a way to contact the instructor if we have a problem logging in. Online class is more disorganized and more difficult to ask for feedback. Also, I have been unable to post responses online a few times. This is very frustrating as it seems to be a problem with the website not my computer. Since I can't get online to ask for help I can't ask technical support for help. I have taken online classes outside of the Silicon Valley and have had better luck than here. That's kind of sad. More instructors so that they are familiar with the students. I suggest that there be more on line instructors, so that they know who the students are. Don’t have any suggestions. It’s been great for me and no complaints. Offer more variety of classes that you take on-line The teachers should be a bit more flexible regarding due dates Expand the number of classes offered. I feel that due dates should be extended a little longer; having 4 online classes makes it hard to get all of the reading and materials done. HAVING LECTURE NOTES ON POWER POINT WILL HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE READING FROM THEIR TEXTBOOKS. IF THE INSTRUCTORS CAN HAVE OPEN OFFICE HOURS RATHER THAN MAKING APPOINTMENTS. LESS DISCUSSION ON DISCUSSION BOARDS IT TAKES UP MORE TIME TO DO OTHER THINGS ONLINE. EXTEND THE DEADLINES FROM ONE WEEK. make sure the professor's have knowledge on how to apply a class designed for on campusmeeting formatted for an online course. The things that I would benefit from the most would be a print option from within Black Board. Some times when I cut and paste things into Microsoft Word they don't fit right on the page and in turn don't print right. Keep up the good work Need on-line Math classes. Providing the reading class materials online instead of buying it separate in book store. chapter notes applicable no suggestions, the online classes work just fine how they are. Offer more classes for general education requirements. HAVE MORE ONLINE CLASSES. Understanding the material on the text book is very important. Offer more. They are great. They offer flexibility and help learn, especially for people working and going to school. Make it easier to find the assignments online. Offer more I learn better by listening to the lecture and taking notes than trying to read all of the material from the text book so maybe a video lecture or something along those lines would help people with the same learning preference. have more subjects for online for example math courses/English courses as well The instructor needs to share more of her work experience and knowledge with the class because so far it has been too much like an independent study class with no interaction/discussion of value. extend test taking time. Have the professor provide feedback on the quizzes taken and explain why the answer is wrong or correct. options to meet with the teachers one on one and more access to study groups after classes Have teachers respond to your questions quickly. If professors would podcast or maybe web cast some lectures. Get rid of the discussion boards it’s a waste of time! Better textbooks to understand the material since you aren't in a class. I don't like discussion board. More subject. I think we can meet at on campus one week one time and explain how to use and how to do homework .that will be good. You need to spend more time for studying because taking online class is like you study by yourself most of the time. I’d suggest that they improve the formatting of the blackboard give extensions for quizzes or testing to those students who require it from DSPS. Lectures to be streamed over the internet. More interactivity, perhaps a live discussion in a chat room. um they’re great hands on projects at home After we do our postings on Discussion Board, there should be something when we come back to it that we have already done our postings for that topic as some instructors gives us points for our discussion. Instructors should tell us everything we need to do for one week rather than having due dates in the middle of the week. Every week is not the same for us. Make sure dates are updated from previous terms. I think it is very efficient already. No need to buy software (CAS72A) for typing. Each assignment can be typed through blackboard. some of the assignment aren't clear I'm not sure yet as this is my first online class with Chabot. The site shouldn't close at midnight. I think all the classes I've taken online at Chabot have been great. Offer more classes the class I'm taking is about understanding computers. The book is geared towards pc and I have a Mac, so it is very difficult to complete assignments and makes the class less valuable to me. Allow online students more time prior to start of semester to obtain the required class materials. Many of us are taking online classes because we don't have time to be on campus and when the course materials list isn't available until only 2 or 3 days before the semester starts we are frequently left waiting as the bookstore orders more of the required materials because we weren't able to get to campus before the items are sold out. Not everyone has credit cards to order materials online. Nothing much just don’t have our teachers overdue the amount of assignments to be done because we have other classes or things to do too PowerPoint presentation should be integrated with PDF file (cohesion). I don't really have any suggestions because, I think that online classes help people manage their time and make it easier for people to take class if they don't have a way to get to campus. I think it is good so far. I think online classes are great! I don't have any, I think all the pertinent things required for a successful online presentation have been addressed. videos or interaction (chat) would be very nice to have use more PowerPoint presentations as lectures and less reading material For someone like me online classes are the best the only I think to improve would be to add more I miss the interaction between other students; it is different in the classroom than it is on discussion board you don’t get to know them personally A way to rate the professor's ability to teach and fairness in grading. Feedback from the instructor on completed work. This online blackboard system functions well. I'm very happy with blackboard and the on line classes right now so I don’t think anything need to be changed This class is a lot of work ... far more than my previous online class, and far more than my on campus classes. Making assignments easier to understand. This is my first time taking online classes so I cannot really evaluate this question effectively at this time. The success of an online class is highly dependent on the involvement of the instructor. My instructor is great. I'm very happy! HAVE MP3 LOOK LIKE ON CAMPUS. make it easier to find what you need on blackboard and the instructors need to respond quicker to questions that you have. make more classes available for on-line Having an Instant Messaging system for students and teachers create a faster communication between the two make blackboard the simply the better More classes, all blackboard set up the same and very clear, maybe email in advance notifications for school work as of right now everything is going good so I cant think of anything to say that would need to be changed or improved. Offer more classes online. I had to drop a math class I need to move forward because I started a new job that had schedule conflicts. If it were offered online I could have worked around that conflict. this is my first online class, so it's great for me. I have nothing to compare it to. Set the deadlines for assignments closer together for each class so we don't have to search all over for what class, what assignment, when it's due. I don't have any suggestions at this time. I would like to have more feedback from the instructor. I would like if online instructors were available on weekends too. (since it’s an online course). Also if we had longer deadlines for our class work. ( because of juggling home , work kids, etc) So we would be able to take more than one or two courses each semester. I wish Chabot would be a quarter system college. Many students are attending other collages due to long semester courses. thanks Online students should purchase a laptop. Some instructors should allow a general forum on the discussion board where students can interact; there isn't one in this class. If the instructors understand the work schedule of the students and other classes requirements and not overload the work online. open more online classes It would be nice to get weekly reminders of what is due by email. Some people are not use to checking blackboard everyday like they would of their emails. Each instructor has different layout options in terms of where to find the assignments, etc. It would be great if they all used the left nav instead of imbedding links within links. daily reminders sent to my e-mail I have taken a couple of online courses. the main factor is the way the instructor sets up the online process. some make it extremely easy to follow and learn while others make the syllabus to hard to understand and follow on the online structure. The taking test you should be able to leave a quiz in the middle and finish it later that is the only problem I see. So far, no improvement is needed. Availability of teacher to answer questions quickly. Offer more subjects online. none at the moment...its pretty straightforward None, I'm fine with them the way that they are. not happy with all the instructors. Some almost seem degrading. I notice the class online now they talk about netiquette when I see many typos and spelling errors in the syllabus. Also the pages don't even match the assignments. When you ask, you are treated poorly. Just please provide more subjects of classes that can be taken online as it's very versatile. I would like to have a "completed sign" next to the assignments that I have already completed so I can visually see what has been done. none really, this is my first one so I didn’t really know what to expect in the first place. So far so good. Put materials/assignments online more than a week ahead of time so that students can complete assignments ahead of time. So far the online class has been great. very user friendly, and the tech. support has been perfect. I’m really enjoying the first time experience. Online classes need lectures such as PowerPoint presentations. More instructor involvement since we don’t see the instructors and some times it is hard to understand them ALTHOUGH I WOULD BE A MORAL THING FOR THE INSTRUCTOR TO RESPOND TO STUDENTS COURSE NEED ASAP AND THIS WOULD BE SOMETING THE INSTRUCTOR KNOWS, HOWEVER, IT IS NOT WHAT THE INSTRUCTOR PRACTICES. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THAT I HAD TO FACE THIS ISSUE. IF THE INSTRUCTORS ARE FAR TOO BUSY THEN THEY SHOULD NOT TAKE ON INSTRUCTING AN ONLINE COURSE SINCE I BELIEVE THEIR MAIN MOTIVATION IS MONEY AND THE THOUGHT OF THE CONVENIENCE? OF IT, WHEN THEIR MAIN OBJECTIVE SHOULD BE TO INSTRUCT ON THE SUBJECT THEY TAKE ON TO TEACH. ALTHOUGH I CAN SAY MORE BUT I AM RUNNING OUT OF TIME AND I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER THAT I AM NOT BEING BIASED, BUT YOU ON THE OTHER HAND MIGHT TAKE ME FOR SELFISH OR OTHER AND DISREGARD THE FACT AS I HAVE SEEN IT. IN DOING SO YOU WOULD BE BIASED AND MY TIME SUBMITTING THIS HERE IS A WASTE. I THINK YOU SHOULD DESIGN A SYSTEM THAT WOULD REMIND THE INSTRUCTOR THAT THERE IS AN UNANSWERED QUESTION OR EMAIL....YOU SHOULD FIGURE OUT THE SOLUTION IF I CAN.THANK U I think the class I have is great. NOTHING, MAYBE JUST HAVING MORE CLASSES AVAILABLE ONLINE. Live chat sessions Live chat sessions for each review before a test. its fine the way it is. Live sessions on each section of review, to clear up any confusion on any subject or area of concern. The interactions of how we individuals can interact with many of the instructors in case that we need any help or the fact that I can have a great achievement in taking self-paced courses. Have more ways to teach than lectures especially when you can clearly see that most of the students are lost. more class options to take online as well as having more online classes where there 100% online and you do not have to meet with an instructor. meet with the students at least once Make more classes available on-line. I would say the individual feedback that the processor gives is a must. Nothing, I am satisfied with the online courses. The classes have a lot of students. This makes reading the discussion board difficult. You cannot always get around to reading everyone’s post. I would like the instructor to chose the top 5 post and have everyone read them. This will help students understand the quality and skill the instructor is looking for. There should be some type of videos that I could watch for the online class related to the class topic get better with the grading of the assignments. Its been nearly a month into class and I have no idea what my grade is An orientation before the class about the class and instructor. I have Vista at home and some assignments are impossible to complete because they are not compatible with Vista. none at the moment, maybe power point slides for the students to use as references There are often too many links that take you every direction, perhaps condensing the site so that the links are in one area I would love more variety of online classes. retake test/quiz/midterms/final as may times as we need to learn the material. =) More classes to be available online. This is my first online course, can't really judge right now. NOTHING EVERYTHING IS GOOD Just keep up the good work! Standard layout of site, teachers have varying styles of linking which can make it difficult. the instructors should respond when emailed. I have a problem and I've been emailing the instructor but she never gets back. They should try to elaborate everything more clearly and interact with the students online more often. I wish that there were more online classes available. Many people like me have a very hard time juggling their home life with their school life, and I feel these people shouldn't be penalized because of this. I am very willing to learn and with the availability of online classes, I am able to do so! However, it is quite difficult at times to add to classes online because of the large amount of people interested. Therefore, I believe more classes should be available. Streamline the format of the professor's websites and provide a syllabus entailing all assignments in calendar view. It becomes difficult to find assignments when they are simply "links" in course materials, assignments, or discussion board. I would like the availability of on-line lecture. Sometimes I find it easier to listen than to try and understand by reading the material. to have more online classes The weekly assignments need to be clear. Having a checklist that summarizes all the work that needs to be done clarifies things. I have problems submitting my assignments due to the program I use, maybe blackboard should have a program where students save their assignments and send it to their teachers instead of attaching to assignment. more detail explanation on classes assignments Offer more classes offer more classes I missed a chemistry final because of blackboard's technical error. The teacher did not let me retake even when it was not my fault. Blackboard needs a fail-safe when server or technical errors arise. maybe a reminder post when assignments are due, just to help out the students. This is my first. I have no problems with it so far. I am happy with the on-line classes. I just don't care for the timed tests. I have to do a lot of preparation just to complete in time and I barely make it. I am not a slow reader, but I think the time limit must create difficulty for many students. Have more online classes and more selections on subjects. The assignments that the instructors provide. I have taken a lot of online classes and honestly I was disappointed with this semester. The instructor does not even care whether your sick or not and he overloads us with assignments as if we don't have other classes. he does not even honor public holidays. isn’t that time meant for us to kind of spend with our family and catch up with other work? honestly I would not recommend my English teacher to anyone especially if you're taking 13 units and working full time. Chabot is a community college and the reasons why we are here is to get an AA degree that we never got the chance to get therefore instructors should be very careful on the amount that they give their students. Remember its what one gets out of the class that matter than the assignments that are crazy I really don't have any suggestions. I have been fairly satisfied with the online classes I have participated in. It depends on who the instructor is If it's a self paced class then let it be just that. I don't have time to post many discussions online. That is a part that instructors can get rid of. No more mandatory discussions Instructor's comments and participation in the discussion board would be very helpful and informational. Since this is my first online class, it is still new to me and I have not taken a test yet. a little more time for the work please. Time management I like the instructors give some optional audio chapter summary for each chapter. I think with all the extra reading because of the discussion board and assignments, instructors should take this into consideration and lighten up on the work load. More organization To me I feel they are pretty good the way they are. I think it’s a good idea to offer orientations at the beginning of the semester to go over the course and how it all works before we even get started. I think that online classes vie taken so far are great. Maybe monthly class meetings to further discuss the subjects and go over things students have problems with. I think we need more discussion. I really enjoy learning online since the time is really hard for me. I think clear directions and not so much directions and details, keeping the directions more simple. I don't think that there are any necessary requirements needed for my two online classes. I wish there were more classes available. All online classes should have study guides for each chapter. Andrew Pierson's Psychology 1 class had great study materials that compensated for the in-class lectures last semester. need to know what computer skills I need to complete online courses. fix blackboard so it’s easier to use. Online tutoring system for the many classes. Have Blackboard that will be able to receive Word2007 documents for classes other than CAS72D--My English 4 class will not receive Word 2007 so I have to type in Word2007 and copy to Word2003 offer more online classes A little more lecture type of material from the instructor, not just reading from text, books, articles, etc. I strongly feel that "Get an orientation to Blackboard in person or in an interactive online session before the class begins" will help students become familiar with Blackboard. Each instructor uses it differently so understanding its functions will help students communicate and turning assignments easier and more effectively. I really miss the specific written feedback I would get if I were turning in written assignments in an on-campus course. Immediate Instructor feedback in regards to assignments, quizzes. I guess a faster way to communicate with the professor and classmates, the one you don't have to wait for a day before you know who responded to which thread and stuff like that. also I think that there should be just one class meeting before the online classes start, because the anonymity feels kind of weird, just one time to see what your professor is like so we could feel some sort of familiarity. None at the moment. First online class and it is going well so far. Weekly deadlines keep you on track. Make deadlines more clear. Show power point slides or videos. Utilize the multi media capability of computers to add more than what can be found in a text book. Before PC's schools would spend thousands on visual aids. Now you can spend less on hardware and use that money on production quality. On line is the future, look at University of Phoenix. You don't need brick and mortar to educate. Utilize the full capacity and unique environment the home PC gives the world. The discussion boards turn into essays for accounting. I need less essays and more accounting. Help desk availability via phone for Blackboard. offer more classes The online classes are fine maybe just having something like email alert would help. The introductions and having to respond to other students input seem to be unnecessary. I do not have a lot in common with other students, so it is hard to respond to them having finished college already. I would like it if more classes were offered online I would like to see a chat line for our class. very good! have a better explanation on what and where do to the assignments All assignments should have a dead line for Sunday's at 10pm, not 3days a week. I like how Solano Community College operates their online classes better than Chabot. there should be more on line classes. Being able to meet with the instructor would be nice. At least he/she should set meetings 3 or 4 times in a semester jus to put everybody on the same page. It would be nice to add a feature, such as GoToMeeting, to allow for online meetings. Communicating only through email and the message board seems to make group projects and interaction, for example, take longer. Tutoring around the clock 24/7 I need more detail on what is going to be on the test. Sometimes, questions that are not in the text book, gives no idea what I learned. Please, be in the right track that I can learn here in online. Offer more classes. From my experience as an online student for the very first time, I can't really give any suggestions due to the quality instruction Scott Hildreth has provided. None really, I haven't had any significant problems with my online classes. The discussion forums (the single most important part of any online class) has always functioned properly and the communication options (e-mail, etc.) work too. As long as the instructor is clear about his or her policies, schedule, and assignments, online courses go quite smoothly. Since everything is read rather than announced, it is important for instructors to be clear and concise in what they write for the students. This usually isn't a problem. I have not had enough experience with on line classes to make any meaningful suggestions. participate in class discussions a little more by responding to other people's comments. I love how they are organized please have announcement to remind student each assignment or quiz Assignments given every week are I think more in online classes. Instructors should not give students all these workload every week since it takes more time for us to do things since we have to research and figure it out by ourselves. e-lectures Provide a place to put your pictures so you can associate the face to the name. get to know your fellow students Provide access to instructor lectures. Perhaps a class chat room to interact with the instructor and classmates on a regular basis. I believe that helps in learning a subject. I personally would like the 1/2 in class and 1/2 online style, but it doesn't match my work schedule. I feel I learn better when I'm in a class environment. It’s pretty good. I have taken many classes on campus but I am loving the online experience as I don't have to travel, park or trek with books to a campus location. Help teachers dictate clearer directions. Nothing is worse than being off-campus and not understanding what you are supposed to do. I would suggest that the instructor should actually reply to my messages about questions I have. Also, to have a wider range of office hours that students can go to ask questions if they can’t reach the professor via email. My teacher has an office hour, but as I can't reach him through email, I also have class during his office hours. I can ask for a certain time to meet with him, but again, he doesn't respond to my emails. So it makes it hard for me to understand everything and to be successful. This is after all, my first time as a user of blackboard online class. Maybe they should add an AIM to this and require the instructor to have it on from a certain time to another certain time. That would be good. Make it easier to switch between online classes. that the instructor should give two weeks to do the assignment instead of one. This class had the 1st chapter posted, so that those of us who had to order books by mail could still participate in the class. I think it is very important to realize that in the first week or so many students are learning how to use the system. I missed an assignment since I didn't yet know how to use all the areas. Online classes and the online teachers should be strictly organized from the beginning of the class and should try to avoid adding assignments in at the last minute. I have noticed that Professor X has a bad habit of not giving his students a time guideline for the semester and seems to be making up assignments as he goes along. This can be very hard for online students because we have to constantly monitor blackboard. My other online classes that I have taken in the past have always had a specific time guideline given at the beginning of the semester, and the teachers always stuck to it. This is the best way to handle online students. occasional on campus meeting such as telecourse classes do no more technical problems more organization. Live technical support during regular "business" hours. (I realize the techies have lives, too, so I don't expect 24-hours-a-day support) I just think some information in regards to assignments could be a little clearer? there should be at least one online section for each class. I really wanted to take Economics 1 online and was very disappointed to find out that there is no online course available for econ 1. For #17 and #18, I can't generalize: It depends on the teacher, really. I'd like some of the teachers who don't really have an idea how to organize Blackboard usefully to get help on that. (Note: Scott Hildreth and Amy Chovnik are both *good* at that, might be good at teaching other teachers.) Make MORE classes available ON-LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing. I like how everything is. Standardizing the location of assignments, tests, etc. for each class...so they are easier to find. All online classes should allow you to work at your own pace. I think they are working great. The on campus classes were more difficult only because they were math and science classes that are harder for me. Have instructors make sure to update the dates on the pre-fabricated forms that have used previously maybe a little more power point and/or audio presentations available as it tends to keep my attention rather than independent reading I think that it is great. I personally wouldn't make any drastic changes. Teacher interaction during discussions. One time appearance to see the instructor. Making sure each instructor has a good organization of the materials and course schedule. Some instructors make it really difficult to follow the classwork. When an instructor uses a different site it tends to be a bit confusing on what is due when. All grades should be at one location, and an easy schedule on when things are due should be provided. I think having more visual aids would help to better understand material. More interaction with the instructors. to be able to personalize my blackboard more detailed about where the information is, The class I am taking know has different web sites to find required material I feel that we should be able to have more classes available online. but other than that I feel online classes are great Having instructors use the same method of organizing their class pages. Same buttons, same formats. no its good as it is I had trouble submitting my response a few times, it would not go through, I think because I took too long to submit it and I had to re-write my response in my notebook and then re-type again which was long and very inconvenient. I wish there would be more time to submit an assignment especially for slow typers like myself. Celia No, everything is done exactly to match an on campus class! Blackboard need to have more editing features (font, load picture to BB under student intro) I suggest more interaction between the teacher and student -no need for discussion board The only thing I would improve would be the availability of the course work because some teachers put the lessons on week by week instead of at the same time and that makes it difficult to get a head start on the next weeks work. The discussion board is overused. I don't need to "chat" with my fellow classmates to learn a subject. keep yourself organized and time management I actually prefer the class that is mainly online but has 3 or 4 classes that you need to attend. There should be on-line lectures on each chapter or at least an overview. Teachers should also be more willing to answer questions right away when the student gets stuck. Besides telling students to post questions on the discussion boards for other classmates to help on. More often than not people don't help each other. Also everything is time sensitive so the instructor needs to be available via e-mail or phone to promptly answer questions. Instructions on assignments need to be clearer and concise b/c after all we are not in class to ask questions about the assignment. I don't have any suggestions at this time as this is the first time I have taken an on line class. I do however really enjoy it and look forward to future on line classes. I think that the online classes should slow down just a bit. Give at least 2 weeks for things to be due. In general, online classes involve a lot more homework and study time as I used to gain most of my class knowledge thru lecture. To improve the online classes, there is nothing that Chabot can do. For me, it's about the teacher being "on top of things". It is very hard when they don't follow their own schedule as to when they will release assignments. Online classes are for students w/o a lot of time and when the work isn't out when it's supposed to be, the students' schedule is thrown off and completion of work is iffy. Not at this moment I don't have any suggestions. This is my very first time taking classes online. There should not be forced replies to discussion board prompts. You should be given the prompt, do the work, post your answer. Having to reply to two or more posts by just saying "good point, thank you for bringing that up," doesn't do much good. The amount of replies should be based on the discussion board and the prompt. Online classes are fine the way they are. Most choices on how to explain the material such as Power Point, videos, etc. More online classes Too much work. Students and instructors loosen up and feel free to interact more with others if they have questions while learning and not be offended at comments. An orientation and e-mail reminders of when assignments are due Have more feed back from instructor I would suggest the Blackboard be the same format for all or most all classes. I think it would help the instructors as well as the students. More Podcast lectures, or just a couple minutes of the instructor talking about the key concepts. More straightforward labeling of links within Blackboard. Some self-paced classes would be nice. Instructors should not duplicate instructions. At beginning of semester present a schedule (Timetable) and allow students to have a clear understanding of what to expect. Hmmm, difficult to answer. What's not to like about an online class! They seem to challenge my writing abilities as I have to think clearly how to formulate an answer. Thinking before writing. That's a great concept. Maybe interactive lessons or demo lessons that you can watch like a video. This will help with understanding then just reading. It would be great if the "Tasks" tool in Blackboard was integrated with the online classes. For example, an instructor could enter the due dates for assignments or dates for tests, and those would show up under the tasks for every student in that particular class. get the some of the teachers to be more organized same layout from all teachers on finding homework, links, and readings I would make more opportunities for the students in an online course to meet up as a whole class. Twice throughout a whole semester is too little. I wish more subjects such as math would be offered online or at least offer more NIGHT math classes. It's extremely difficult to meet the match Gen Ed requirement when you work because of the times the math classes are offered. more PowerPoint and slides This is my first experience with an on-line class and it is going very well. I can't think of any recommendations except keep up the good work. I would like to have a few classes with my instructor before I start doing my assignments. This is my first time taking an online class. So far I really do not have any input for improvements. THE BOOKS S/B MORE REASONABLE Collaborative - Students should communicate online with their instructor and each other, in some cases working in teams on group projects. The courses are designed to foster active and collaborative learning and use an interactive style of problem solving that improves student understanding and retention. Faster responses Standardize the layout of the blackboard site for every class. When taking multiple online courses, it can be difficult to remember different areas to look on different classes. Also, keep all links internal. Some classes ask you to look at a web site for an assignment, which are sometimes unavailable. A mirror on Chabot's site would ensure this isn’t a problem. allow more time to complete assignments better organized books, online tutoring of the book. The instructor should reply back to my emails for my online classes is just great but it would be nicer if you have all the courses that you offer online provide more information about the instructor. Ways to contact them easier regarding problems with homework or the assignments. Nothing everything has been helpful and I even went to the blackboard class and that was helpful nothing, there great! The students can be more involved with each other. The most difficult for me was getting my books for the semester since just even stopping at the bookstore is difficult with my schedule. I did like that my geography class is based on an "ebook". The instructor understands that some students are new to online classes. The only thing I would make improvements on would be the blackboard website. It was a little confusing for me the first week - not very user friendly. If ALL instructors provided a very detailed list of what was expected each week for homework it would allow students to work ahead in our free time. Some weeks are busier than others and knowing the semester’s expectations helps to stay on top of the class instead of having only one week to complete assignments. I would like to see more courses for the upper division. Being that the universities are so expensive I would like to take as many courses online towards my BA. My experience with on-line classes is great. I would not change a thing. Please, ADD MORE!!! I believe it's important to know in advance what type of instructors there are. We all learn differently, and I feel it's best to know what the style or expectations are before we enroll in the class. Have quiz/test retakes. No just to get a good grade, but really learn the subject. I have none, the blackboard system is very user friendly, and allows for my personal success in online courses. Please offer more on line classes. Clear instruction is best way to improve online classes. I feel that the online classes at Chabot are fine as is. I think they are just wonderful. What do you most like about online classes at Chabot? The Discussion Board. If a student wants to do it fine but if they don't then that’s fine as well it shouldn't be part of the grading process. It’s fast and easy to access. it’s organized. easy to use. being able to get grades quickly it’s convenient and drives u more to read the book. the whole online/blackboard course is not difficult to understand, it's easy to learn. Also it allows us more time to finish our work. Online courses are fun actually. The availability of additional class materials such as instructor's note and power point slides. It's very convenient for students who have work and family commitments. They correspond well with my work schedule. My instructors are quick to respond to questions and with feedback. Also, that I can fit education into my odd schedule. I like the organization of the course(s)' content That I don't need to talk with my classmates or teacher; I prefer write them because English is not my first language, so I can't speak English very well. The flexibility I have for the work. the ability to do my work whenever I can when I’m not busy with my daughter Less distraction at personal computer than in a classroom. The flexibility to complete assignments between Mondays thru sun. The material is in reach and I can stay with my kids and still learn. it fits in my work schedule, and I can stay home to finish my course. It really works with my rotating shift schedule the format is great, GUI is great, tests are great, discussions topic are great. Great learning tool... That you can do your work when you have free time. convenience works with my schedule....and I feel more comfortable participating online. that it is convent being able to work from home when the kids are asleep, helps me not to loose the family time I would if I had to go to campus. I love the flexibility of being able to do study time, homework and testing for courses at a time that works best for me, within a certain time frame. All homework being due every Sunday at midnight, for example, puts me in control of when I get it done before the deadline. The flexibility. Please make more classes available on line!! The freedom to do my work at my own time I like that for the most part I can get all of my work done whenever I want to, not a set schedule. its convenient It is easy to do the work when I am busy with other things. The flexibility in the schedule, I can work early in the morning or late at night. It all depends on what time I have free to complete the work. The ability to work at my own pace and during off hours. you don’t need to attend in the class. to work right at home I can work on my own time. The ease of use of Blackboard, the discussion boards, exams, overall set up and time savings it offers. Availability. You get to work at your own pace and I like how your quizzes and test get graded very quick the flexibility it’s easy and teachers are nicer. gives me the opportunity to complete my work when I can with a Sunday deadline. doing my work at my house, as opposed to having to drive to the campus and sitting in class for an extended period of time The flexibility of the class as if I would have some problem or some reason for not being able to finish the assignments on time, I can finish them any time without penalty I can do it on my time The availability to work and take tests on my schedule and when I am ready to write or think. I can spend my time with my family and also finish my school. That they work with your schedule! You can study on your own pace. Online and on campus are equivalent experiences. I like that I can participate more online versus in class with my instructor and classmates. When a course I am interested in is offered online, it makes me happy for it is a relief to complete the course at my own time at the comfort of my own home. The time for online classes is very flexible. The Organization of the material on the web. the ability to work ahead This is my first serious online class. I'm just hoping that my instructor (Ms.Klein) can keep up w/ her students’ passiveness/a sudden slow down in participation. Without her monitoring her students, I myself wasn't aware that my Homework Mgr. was gone from my page screen(as I said I'm not very comp.literate)--I'm still seeking tech.support w/ the McGraw Hill C.S.--so far no progress yet. This is one of the major frustrations that I think students encounter--not having that quick response C.S. on tech support. The ability to work from home at whatever time you may have a chance to. This is especially helpful for those of us who have families and work. don't have to drive easy to access, easy to learn and use. The flexibility it allows me/my schedule. convenience The instructors are very helpful. flexibility I like on-line classes because I'm disabled. I can't sit or stand long, due to back surgery. Flexible time to be "in class". I can log on anytime I have the time and submit work or make comments...very excellent in a hurried world. I have the ability to control my surroundings that enables me to be able to complete my assignments. the course materials and the organization of it. no attending a class on campus I like the flexibility of somewhat being able to move at your own pace. In addition to this, it takes a lot of pressure of the student. convenience The flexibility, however, I do miss the instructor explaining themselves in person. The Professor is very good about providing feedback and additional help quickly, and more often via e-mails. convenience and flexibility I can do it on my own time when I can fit it in my schedule The ability to be flexible I have an infant so many of my test are taken late at night or early in the morning while she is asleep. the comfort of being at home, but it seems as if it’s more costly to do online classes. I really like online classes because I feel more that I get things done in a more timely manner... I am able to learn on my own time and for the most part, at my own pace. I like not dealing w/ the nervousness and anxiety of the first day of school. I also like not having to do group activities on days that I am not in the mood or too nervous. THE FLEXIBILITY that I can study and do the assignments when it possible, instead of having to worry about driving to school and worrying about schedule conflicts. the flexibility of when you can do your work. I can do on my own time. Works well with busy schedule. The ability to do that work as I have time for it. There are weeks that I have the time to do three weeks worth of homework, and there are times that I have none. the ability to move ahead makes a big difference. I get to do it on my own time and we have about a week to finish the homework. I also like how we get our grades back as soon as we finish a quiz! l LIKE THAT I CAN STUDY AND DO MY ASSIGNMENTS AT TIMES THAT I CHOOSE can be accessed anytime...I access my online material when the kids go to bed at night or whatever odd hours I have for studying...its much more convenient than evening campus courses. Everything. The accessibility of the classes from anywhere. It allows me to go to school with my unique work schedule. I choose when I study. It is on my own schedule. The instructors are very good. Well, I learn much better when I’m in a quiet comfortable environment such as my home. Classes like Mr. Moniz history 7, and 8, Mr., Hildreth astronomy, and Mr. Benkman music class were very, very challenging. But in the end I really appreciate their ways of teaching because they're the only online classes I’ve learned something from. Online classes can be very hard at times but it helps with the learning process. Only thing I would change is other online instructors’ ways of teaching. I would tell them to take notes from the instructors mentioned. Offer more writing quizzes/discussions to ensure that student s are doing the work. flexible time schedule for me That I can attend when I have time. Not being restricted to a specific day to attend class. Convenience and flexibility The discussion boards and the reality that I', able to check my progress within the class) on a daily basis. In on campus classes, instructors make too many grading errors, and if a student were to fall behind in checking their grades, their final grade may suffer. I can work on my own time I like the convenience of being home with my children and still able to participate in my class discussions The flexibility of schedule. Being able to complete assignments and quizzes anywhere and anytime I like before the due date great...gives me a chance to work independently and be able to contact my teacher easily if any question(s) arise.
