THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE AS HE

LEAVES THE POSITION OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF

THE CULTURAL COUNCIL OF GREATER JACKSONVILLE;

PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, born into a Navy family, Robert Arleigh “Bob” White
13
graduated from Fletcher High School and earned a bachelor’s degree
14
summa cum laude from Oklahoma Baptist University with a double
15
major in English and speech/theatre arts; and
16
WHEREAS,
Mr.
White
returned
to
Jacksonville
and
taught
17
English, speech, drama and creative writing at Wolfson and Fletcher
18
High Schools for 11 years during much of which time he was also the
19
Artistic Director at Theatre Jacksonville; and
20
WHEREAS, after 16 years as Artistic Director, Bob White was
21
promoted to Executive Director of Theatre Jacksonville where during
22
his total tenure of 26 years he artistically directed or produced
23
nearly a hundred plays, including producing the Theatre’s annual
24
Shakespeare at the Met series for 5 years, which was recognized by
25
the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs as one of the best outdoor
26
theatre offerings in the state, and during which time he secured
27
Theatre Jacksonville’s financial future through the development of
28
long-lasting
29
artists and schools; and
partnerships
with
corporations,
local
businesses,
30
WHEREAS, in 2000 Mr. White was hired as Executive Director of
31
the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, the umbrella agency
1
that provides advocacy, technical assistance and funding to local
2
arts
3
nationally acclaimed institutions such as the Jacksonville Symphony
4
Orchestra, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and many, many
5
more, and which also administers the City’s Cultural Service Grant
6
program; and
organizations
ranging
from
new
and
emerging
groups
to
7
WHEREAS, in his role at the Cultural Council, Bob White has
8
been a tireless and effective champion for the cause of the arts
9
and culture in Jacksonville, and has made the case strongly for the
10
economic and civic value of the performing and visual arts to the
11
creation of a vibrant, attractive community that appeals to and
12
inspires persons from every background and walk of life; and
13
WHEREAS, Mr. White has recently announced his departure from
14
the Cultural Council to take on new professional challenges, and
15
his
16
greatly missed; now therefore

and
advocacy
in
the
cultural
community
will
17
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:
