OF THE UPON AND THANKING JACKSONVILLE THE LINDA CHILDREN’S OCCASION OF HER 10 11 WHEREAS, Linda Lanier was born in Great Britain, raised in 12 Cincinnati, Ohio, and received 13 University of Cincinnati; and her bachelor’s degree from the 14 WHEREAS, after serving as a volunteer then an employee of 15 Planned Parenthood in Cincinnati, Mrs. Lanier became the Executive 16 Director of Planned Parenthood of Northeast Florida from 1991 to 17 1997 18 Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless, where she helped to transform 19 the then still new facility and organization into the cornerstone 20 of the public effort to deal with Jacksonville’s homeless issues by 21 expanding 22 necessities of food and shelter to the provision of a comprehensive 23 range of services including health, dental and vision care, social 24 service case management, psychiatric counseling, child care, and 25 employment and housing services; and before taking the over center’s as the Executive mission from Director provision of of the the I.M. basic 26 WHEREAS, after six years running the Sulzbacher Center, Linda 27 Lanier was selected by the Jacksonville Children’s Commission board 28 to be the Commission’s Executive Director in 2003, a position she 29 has filled with distinction for the past eight years and from which 30 she has recently announced her retirement; and 31 1 WHEREAS, as she did at the Sulzbacher Center, Linda Lanier has 2 helped lead and guide the Children’s Commission to its place as the 3 linchpin in the City’s multifaceted efforts to deal with the full 4 range of issues that affect our city’s young people, from quality 5 day 6 intervention programs for at-risk children, and from summer camp 7 opportunities to mentoring to literacy promotion, all of which she 8 has done with vision, determination and integrity, safeguarding the 9 public’s investment and leveraging local dollars into millions of 10 dollars of state and federal grants and private giving to expand 11 the City’s capacity to deal with the huge needs; and care facilities to after-school programs to prevention and 12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Lanier is widely recognized in Jacksonville and 13 throughout Florida for her expertise both in the areas of homeless 14 issues and children’s issues, and at various times has served as a 15 gubernatorial appointee to the Florida Commission on Homelessness, 16 as 17 Coalition, and as Chair of the Florida Afterschool Network, and in 18 2003 was the winner of the Florida Times-Union’s EVE Award for 19 Employment; and Treasurer of the city’s Emergency Services and Homeless 20 WHEREAS, the City will greatly miss Linda Lanier’s tireless 21 advocacy for the needs and interests of the most vulnerable members 22 of our society, and wishes to thank her for her years of service 23 and outstanding dedication to the causes she so fervently believes 24 in; now therefore 25 BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville: 26 Section 1. Commendation.
