Los Angeles Unified School District Roy Romer, Superintendent Chatsworth High School Dan Wyatt, Principal 10027 LURLINE AVENUE, CHATSWORTH, CALIFORNIA 91311 TELEPHONE: (818) 341-6211 Fall 2004 12th Grade Humanities Dear Parents, Welcome to a new and exciting school year at Chatsworth High. I look forward to providing an excellent educational experience in U. S. History this semester. I would like to give you a basic statement of what the course will cover and a brief overview of the semester content. Course Description & Objectives: This 2-semester course is designed to incorporate aspects of American Government and Economics in an effort to help you understand and make a smooth transition into the outside world you will soon enter. Some of the themes we will be visiting this and next semester in Humanities will take a decidedly social studies bent with a focus on the governmental and economic perspectives. Some of the topics we will be exploring in depth include how the electoral process has helped to shape America as we know it today, the rise of feminism in America in the mid to late 1900s, and consumer issues dealing specifically with the media and its influence on you. Course Requirements You will be required to turn in all homework assignments. Three missing assignments over the course of the semester equals a "U" in work habits. You must take all tests! Failure to take a test by the end of the makeup period (1 week after the test is given) will result in a zero and will drop your final grade by approximately 10 percent. Classwork is required, also. Too many missing class assignments will also help to lower your overall grade. Over the course of the year, several essays will be required, also. 10 hours of Community Service is required to pass this class. A TYPED Resume will be required. All major assignments that are turned in must be typed. Handwritten major assignments will not be accepted. There will not be a final exam. Instead, a final project will be assigned that combines what you have learned in this class, and your art and English classes. Key Content Standards Some of the important California state standards that will be covered this year include 12.1, 12.2, 12.4, and 12.5.
