PTSO MEETING, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH, 2010
Present: Claudia Sleep (President), Carol Moore (Vice-President), Brett Tomlinson Vice
Principal), Kody Berkeley (Leadership), Kevin Heil (incoming Leadership), Sheila
Hollenbeck (Secretary), Niki Harris, Peggy Faessen
The meeting was called to order at 5.30 pm. Introductions were made and Peggy Faessen
came, who is involved with the Middle School Board and would like to become involved
with the high school PTSO. Kevin Heil will be taking over from Kody Berkley as
student representative at the PTSO meetings.
Leadership Report:
1. The new event, held on March 13th, is the Sadie Hawkins Dance ‘Under the Sea’.
Tickets are $5.00 per person and will be held from 8 – 11.00pm. All proceeds
will go towards the El Pomar Organization and Leadership has to raise $500.00.
If $500 is raised, then grants up to $5000 from the El Pomar Organization will be
handed out to non-profits in Summit County.
2. Orientation for incoming freshman will be held at the High School on Monday,
15th February.
3. Kevin asked for the chaperone list from the PTSO volunteer data base.
The Minutes were read and Niki made a motion to accept and Claudia seconded. The
minutes were approved.
Principal’s Report:
1. Freshman Orientation for incoming students and parents will be held at the
High School this Monday, Feb, 15th. This will start at 6.00 pm and last for 2
hours. There will be a power point showing course work, expectations and
success. A member from the PTSO will talk at 6.00 pm and present what the
PTSO is all about and how to be involved.
2. Registration – nearly finished except for 9th graders next Thursday.
3. Spring Sports Kick-Off is Wednesday, February 10th.
4. Winter Break starts on February 20th.
5. CSAP will be from March 16-17th and March 23-24th.
6. Standard Rate Assessment. - Leaders will be trained on the parent viewer power
school so that it is easier to understand for parents.
7. Math Tutoring. There is a before and after school schedule set up. There is a
link on the High School Web Page.
8. Celebrations: - Pre-collegiate Program.
25 kids have applied to college this year. Five ELA students applied for local
scholarships.
Molly Griffith, the pre-collegiate co-coordinator is taking kids to the Cherry
Creek Diversity Conference and providing tutoring at the middle school. This
supports the academic progress of the college bound.
Action Item- Kristie Berkeley is to buy a microwave this week so that there will
be 4 microwaves in the school cafeteria.
Grant Requests: We have $1750 cash in hand (see Treasurer’s Report).
1. Media Specialist (Leah Schultz) asked for $750 to update books in the library.
$200 was voted on by the PTSO board via e-mail.
2. Ms CK asked for $200 for the World Affairs Challenge Competition. This
involves 25 students but is a growing, valid cultural link club in the school.
Claudia made a motion to approve this amount and Sheila seconded, all approved.
3. Darren Brungardt would like $200 to help fund the ‘Love Me Tender’ Snowshoe
Adventure. 75% will go to the Denise Oaks-Moffet Children’s Scholarship Fund.
The other 25% will go to the SHS track team. Carol made a motion to approve
this amount, Niki seconded and all approved.
4. Rhonda Reichardt asked for $200 for students with severe needs. Winter
Wednesdays is a program for students with severe needs to participate in physical
activities and socialize. Carol made a motion to approve this amount for this
program and Claudia seconded. All approved.
Parent/Teacher Conference Meals
Carol is putting this together with Sheila and Niki. People will be called to bring in
meals/products for the March Conferences. Carol will co-ordinate Set Up and Sheila will
co-ordinate cleaning up. This is for 135 Teachers and Staff.
Peggy Faessen will be the new membership Co-coordinator.
City Market Cards: The PTSO received a check for $110.00!
Box Tops are also being collected.
The meeting adjourned at 6.50 pm.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 9th at 5.30 pm.
