Mrs. Beard’s Class Policies
2013 – 2014
Parents, please review these class policies carefully so that you understand what will be expected of your
child in my classroom. Contact me if you have any questions.
Student Responsibilities: Students are responsible for themselves. It is their responsibility to make sure all
work is completed and turned in. I will not repeatedly ask a student to turn in missing work. I will not be
responsible for making sure that a student has packed up all his/her homework and study materials. I will not be
responsible for making sure students keep up with his/her materials or belongings (including money).
Grades: A grade will be given in math and science. Grades will be given for class assignments, weekly tests,
projects, quizzes, homework, and 9-weeks exams. Students must pass all subjects in order to be promoted to the
5th grade. Parents may access students’ grades online through the Parent Portal on the school webpage.
Grading Scale:
91 – 100 = A
81 – 90 = B
71 – 80 = C
61 – 90 = D
<61 = F
Averages will be calculated as follows:
Major Grades (tests, projects, etc.)
Minor Grades (quizzes, cw, hw)
9 Weeks Tests
50%
35%
15%
Homework: Students will have a homework chart on which to record assignments. It is the student’s
responsibility to keep up with this. Students will have math homework each night except for weekends and
holidays. If your child tells you he/she does not have homework, he/she is mistaken! Even in the event that a
student does not have written homework, he/she always has something to study. Tests will be given on a weekly
basis in each subject, and students need to spend time at home preparing for these tests. I encourage you to help
your child with homework and/or check homework; however, please do not do your child’s work for him/her. I
try to keep homework to a minimum, and it provides important skills practice. A homework average will be
given in each subject each nine weeks. As long as a student completes all homework assignments on time, that
average will be a 100. For each homework assignment not completed on time, a student will have 5 points
deducted from his/her homework average.
Expectations for completed work: All student work must be completed in pencil and in cursive handwriting.
Work completed in pen or in print will have to be redone.
Absences/Make-up Work: Parents are encouraged to have their children at school unless a child is ill or there
is an emergency. Please have your child here on time and avoid checking your child out early if it is not
necessary. Attendance will be taken for each subject (4 times daily). Students must bring an excuse for any part
of the day that is missed or the absence will be unexcused. Also, please note that there will be no check-outs
allowed after 2 p.m. each day (new district rule). Additionally, if a student is not present 63% of the day,
he/she is counted absent for the entire school day (state law).
There is no way to “make-up” missed classroom instruction/practice time. It is the student’s
responsibility to make up any missed written assignments in a timely manner (refer to student handbook). Any
missed tests will be made up the day the student returns to school.
Student Binders: Each student will have a binder in which to keep all notes, study materials, completed
practice, etc. We will spend time in class making sure the binder is separated into subjects. Students should
keep their binders organized by subject. This will help students find needed materials easily. Students should
bring home their binders each night and then bring them back to school each day.
Class Rules:
1. Listen carefully.
2. Follow directions.
3. Work quietly. Do not disturb others who are working.
4. Respect yourself and others. Treat others kindly with your words and actions.
5. Respect school and personal property. Keep your area neat.
6. Remain seated unless you have permission to get up.
7. Work and play safely.
8. Follow all school rules.
Rewards: Students will receive rewards for following rules including praise, stickers, etc.
Consequences: Consequences will be given for not following the rules as follows.
1st offense: Warning
2rd offense: Lose recess/snack
3rd offense: Paddling/parent contact (If you do want your child to be paddled, he/she may be referred to the
principal for further discipline)
Keep in mind, that some offenses may be severe enough to skip steps (for example, if a child hits someone, he
or she may automatically receive a paddling/office referral even if he/she has not already been in trouble that
day).
Behavior reports and grades will be sent home weekly to be signed by a parent.
Open-Door Policy: I have an open-door policy in my classroom. I encourage you to come by anytime you
would like and keep up with how your child is doing in class; however, if you need to speak with me privately
or discuss something important, please schedule a conference during my planning time. My planning time is
from 1:00 – 1:30 each day except Wednesday
