AP Information Evening for Rising 9th Graders and Parents

AP courses are excellent for giving the students:
 practice in good study habits, organization and prioritizing
 practice in analyzing and synthesizing information—and using it in innovative ways
 practice in creative, narrative, and expository writing and in critical and analytical essays
 a love of learning
 preparation for college expectations
 a head start on college credits depending on AP exam scores and individual college
policies
More attributes of AP courses:
 They offer in depth study of material that interests students—students can concentrate on
AP courses in certain subject areas and choose not to take AP courses in other areas…or
they can take a variety of courses to suit varied interests.
 Students can take 1 or more AP courses each year, particularly after the 9 th grade.
 They are offered beginning in 9th grade vs. IB, which begins in 11th grade.
 No travel or out of district transportation to another location is involved—all courses are
offered here at Central.
 As a senior, AP courses can be combined with ACCEL classes, which are college classes
taught on our campus by college professors.
18 Advanced Placement courses are currently offered for 2010-11 at FCHS.
AP Human Geography is the only AP course offered to 9th grade students.
Self motivation, self-discipline, maturity, a strong work ethic, good reading skills and reading
comprehension are required. Does this sound like you? Please speak with your 8th grade
teachers this month for a recommendation. Over 200 students each year take advantage of AP
course offerings at Forsyth Central HS while still enjoying a full athletic, extracurricular and social
life—you can be a part of this motivated student group at Forsyth Central High School next year.

Course Content:
 How humans and the world interact
 How humans have shaped and changed the Earth’s surface
 Why people move from place to place
 How and why languages, religions and cultures have spread
 The globalization of ideas, practices and traditions of the world
Characteristics that will lead to success in the AP class:
Having an “A” in the current middle school social studies course is not the only criterion that makes
a student a good candidate fro the course. This is a college level course taught on a college level,
with college level expectations.
Recommended students should be:
 Self-disciplined and self-motivated
 Mature
 Logical and analytical
 Committed to completing projects and assignments during the summer and through out
the year.
Recommended students should have
 A strong work ethic
 A strong and varied vocabulary
 A commitment to academic excellence
