The final form of ALL food delivered to the cells for energy is: Glucose
The glycemic index (G.I.) is a rating (1-100) of how rapidly a food will raise blood sugar (Dr. Jenkins)
Why important – Speed Kills:
Rapid increases in blood sugar cause an insulin response
Abuse of insulin causes damage over time
Glucose is the standard; it rapidly raises your blood sugar, and has a high index score of 100.
All foods can be rated relative to glucose.
Supplementation
High Quality Multi-Vitamin
Essential Fatty Acids
Low Glycemic Foods
Focus on foods under 50
Some allowed 50-70
Exercise
5x’s per week, 30-60 minutes, moderate or intense
FUN!
All Three in The Usana RESET:

Does it work?....
Weight loss of 13 pounds of body weight.
BMI and waist circumference reduced.
Systolic & diastolic blood pressure dropped.
Total cholesterol levels dropped 15 percent.
LDL cholesterol levels dropped 17 percent.
Insulin sensitivity significantly increased by 14 percent.
Fasting blood glucose levels declined slightly

Oxidative Stress – the Glycemic cycle
Caused by what we eat – High glycemic foods kick off the cycle
No protection – antioxidants
(The glycemic cycle is not the only cause of oxidative stress – sun, pollutants, etc just add to the problem)
1. We eat high glycemic foods lacking nutritional value and anti-oxidant support
2. Foods with a high glycemic index spike the blood sugar
7. The body’s protective mechanism releases hormones: cortisol (stress), adrenalin (fight or flight), glucagon and growth hormone to normalize sugar levels. However , they create an uncontrollable HUNGER , cravings, emotional eating and guilt and the desire to eat another high glycemic snack or meal: “Carb addition”
3. High sugars cause inflammation and damage to the arteries
6. High insulin load drives blood sugar below normal called hypoglycemia. We feel a shaky weakness or mental confusion because the brain needs blood sugar in order to think.
5. Insulin actually begins to stimulate production of
FAT from sugar and inhibits release of fat from cells and becomes our storage hormone
4. Body must control sugar levels in a narrow range so responds by simulating the release of insulin.
Insulin transports sugar to cell to be utilized as energy OR stored as fat .
Damage to arterial wall
Elevated triglycerides and cholesterol
Thickening of the arterial wall
Damage to cholesterol alters it’s function (Oxidized Cholesterol) creates “foam cells”
High blood pressure and cardio-vascular disease
Closing of capillary bed
KEY: Increased resistance to insulin: insulin levels become elevated
If we don’t make changes we are headed for:
Metabolic Syndrome: which develops over time as insulin levels continue to rise creating an increase in the problems listed here.
Type II Diabetes: which has increased 500% during the past generation with 90% of the cases due to insulin resistance
Low glycemic eating to stop the glycemic stress
Nutritional supplementation to heal the oxidative damage
Exercise to open the capillary bed and increase blood flow to muscles
Provides key source of nutrition for the cells to heal themselves
Allows cholesterol to do it’s healing work on the arterial wall
The creation of this healing environment allows the cells to reverse the damage caused by oxidative stress
Protection from further damage
One of the three components of lifestyle change: result of all three superior to one or two alone
Supplements provide what our foods do not, the full balance of nutrition required by the cell
These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The components of the RESET program are foods and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. As with any health or fitness program, a sensible eating plan and regular exercise are required in order to achieve long-term results. Results will vary.
Not getting it from food:
The USDA surveyed 16,000 Americans and found that not one person obtained 100 percent of essential nutrients such as magnesium, vitamin E, and zinc.
1
Similarly, children and adolescents did not obtain enough essential nutrients such as folate, vitamin C, and calcium.

It’s NOT getting to you…
In a recent study, researchers discovered that more than half (54 percent) of the nutritional supplements tested did not disintegrate properly. This study illustrates that disintegration, one basic indicator of product quality, is still a concern for dietary supplements.1

Not Balanced
A study conducted at Yale New Haven Hospital tested 257 vitamin products. Only 49 were judged as having adequate ratios of nutrients.
