EARLY LIFE
George Washington Carver was born in 1864
on a farm in Missouri
 Had a mother and an older brother named Jim
 He was a slave
 He got sick a lot
 People called him the plant doctor
 His mother was stolen by slave robbers

EDUCATION
George went to Simpson College and Iowa
State College
 He had to go to blacks only schools
 He graduated high school in 1884 at age 19
 He was a professor at the Tusskee Institute

INTERESTS AND HOBBIES
George loved to work in the garden
 He liked to heal sick plants
 He liked to draw and paint flowers and plants
 He liked to invent things like ways to use
peanuts

PROBLEMS AND OBSTACLES
George was born into slavery
 He had to face racism
 He taught himself to read and paint
 He had to switch schools a lot because of racist
rules

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
George knew more than the teachers
 He was hired to work at the college because he
was so smart
 He found many ways to use peanuts! Like hand
lotion, shampoo, glue, paint, laundry soap, and
coffee and vinegar

INTERESTING FACTS
In 1953 George’s birth place was a national
park
 His face was on a stamp

