BY THE OF THE LESSON
 All pupils will have played the smarties game
 All pupils will have written a report about how there
population has changed over time
 All pupils will be able to collect data for two dif ferent
countries
 Most pupils will be able to the data to explain population
change in that country.
PLAY THE SMARTIES GAME
 You will be working in groups of 6
 On each table is a set of instructions
 Each group needs to choose a team leader who will explain
the rules of the game
 You will be expected to complete the sheet provided during
the game.
USING YOUR FINDINGS
Write a report using the headings about how your countries
population changed during the cause of the game.
What happened and how did it af fect the population at each
point?
Example
During the game my country experienced a deep economic
recession. Poverty and the lack of jobs meant that a lot of
males migrated to a countries where they could find jobs. This
meant the population began to decrease due to migration.
Having less males in my country also meant less children were
born in the future; decreasing the population further.

Look at these two countries
What does the data tell you about the population of each country?
How are they different and what could the possible reasons be?
Read page 145
In 6 to 8 sentences; compare reasons for Russia’s and Yeman’s population change.

YOUR OWN INVESTIGATION
 https://www.cia.gov/librar y/publications/the -worldfactbook/index. html
You are going to be given two countries to investigate.
Using the link above you; you need to find the following information.
 Fer tility rates (the average number of children a women will have)
 Bir th rate
 Death rate
 % of HIV/Aids
 Life expectancy
Like you did with Russia and Yemen; you are going to use the data to
explain the population change within the countries
