LEARNING ASSISTANT PROGRAM University of Arkansas Department of Mathematical Sciences What is the Learning Assistant (LA) Program? The LA program is an exciting program that involves undergraduate/graduate students in teaching and learning while helping them to improve their teaching, leadership, and interpersonal skills. LA Program Goals: • To improve student support in undergraduate mathematics courses. • To foster active learning environments within the classroom. • To provide an opportunity for qualified undergraduates to develop leadership, teaching, and group facilitation skills Responsibilities of a Learning Assistant: • Attend Pre-Semester meetings the week before classes begin. • Attend weekly staff meetings for assigned course(s). • Participate in 1-2 class sections of assigned course. Responsibilities of a Learning Assistant: • 5-10 hours per week in MRTC teaching labs • Attend a Math Education Seminar or LA Focus Group • Grading for assigned classes • Lead Supplementary Instruction (SI) sessions for assigned course. Qualifications: Learning Assistants should: • Be skilled in the material for assigned courses • Have in interest in teaching • Work well with students • Have passed or tested out of assigned courses • Have passed the SLPT or scored a 26 or above on the internet based TOEFL speaking subtest. • Have scored a 26 or above on the internet based TOEFL writing subtest or have scored a 70 on the ELPT. How will other students benefit? • Additional academic support • More personalized instruction • More interactive classroom environment • Increased attention on effective teaching and learning in critical courses How will you benefit? • Work closely with faculty and staff in your field. • Develop communication, group facilitation, and teaching skills. • Help other students succeed. • Earn a paycheck by doing something you love! Timeline: • Applications are due on October 31. • Interviews will take place November 3-7. • Final decisions will be made by November 14.
