The suffix

-al

What is a suffix? What does it do?

RULE: A suffix is a group of letters added at the end of a word.

A common suffix is –al. Adding –al changes a noun into an adjective.

-al can mean for or of. The drum is a (musical) instrument.

The drum is a instrument of/for music.

Notice how the noun follows the adjective with the –al ending.

Example: accident } accidental

Nouns the have the letter ‘e’ at the end, should be changed. Drop the ‘e’ before adding a vowel like –al.

Use the new words to complete the sentences.

a) The ………………..van took the furniture to the new house.

b) The bride bought a dress in the ………….shop.

c) Jenny was in the hospital with a …………..injury.

d) Diwali is a ……………..of lights.

The common suffixes –ship , -hood , -ness and -ment

RULE: When you add –ness to a word ending in –y, change the y to i.

Example: Silly } Silliness

Owner + ship = ownership

Child + hood = childhood

Govern + ment = government

Fit + ness = fitness

-ness can mean, to be in that condition.

Fitness = to be fit. Ahmed has joined a fitness club.

Readiness = to be ready. Ali is in a state of readiness.
