In this topic TOPIC 3: PHILIPPINES IN RIZAL'S TIME & THE DEVELOPMENT OF FILIPINO
NATIONALISM
1. I learn that, during Rizal's time, the Philippines was a Spanish colony undergoing
tremendous changes in its social, economic, and political institutions. The country was
extremely stratified, with a tiny number of affluent landowners and political elites owning
the majority of the resources, while the mass of the population, made up of peasants and
workers, was impoverished and oppressed. As a notable writer and thinker, Rizal was
instrumental in molding the growth of Filipino nationalism by fighting for social and
political changes and developing national consciousness and identity.
2. I felt that Rizal's writings and beliefs, I believe, created a sense of pride and identity
among Filipinos who had previously been marginalized and mistreated under Spanish
authority. Rizal's works exposed the colonial government's injustices and excesses, and
he pushed his fellow Filipinos to band together and strive for the benefit of their nation.
Many people were motivated to take action and fight for their rights and liberties by his
message of optimism and perseverance.
3. I developed that the rise of Filipino nationalism during Rizal's reign prepared the
foundation for the country's ultimate independence from Spanish and shaped current
Filipino identity. It also instilled in Filipinos a revitalized feeling of nationalism and pride,
which is still an important component of the country's culture and legacy today. Rizal's
legacy inspires future generations of Filipinos to fight for their rights, advocate social
justice, and strive for a brighter future for their nation.
