A 16-tooth 20° pressure angle spur pinion rotates at 200 rev/min and transmits 5 hp (light
shock) to a 48-tooth spur gear. Both are uncrowned. Having uniform thickness, accurately and
rigidly mounted. The diametral pitch is 06 teeth per inch, a face width of 02 inch and a quality
number of 7. The gears are straddle-mounted evenly spaced between bearings. This is a

commercial enclosed gear unit. Both pinion and gear are grade 2 steel with a Brinell hardness
of 200. Take size factor Ks = 1 & KT = 1. Assume a pinion life of 108 cycles and a reliability of
0.95. Use the given data to find
a) Lewis bending stress
b) AGMA bending stress and factor of safety
c) AGMA contact stress and factor of safety
