University of Botswana Department of Mechanical Engineering Course Code: MMB 441 Course Name: Machine Design II Session: Semester 2, 2020/2021 Design Project No: 1 Due Date: 02 May 2021 In a turbine drive 300 kW power is transmitted using a pair of double helical gear. The pinion speed is 2950 rpm and that of the gear is about 820.5 rpm. There are no spare constraints on the gear drive. Selecting suitable materials, design the pinion and the gear to last for 106 cycles. Design the complete gear box by considering no lubrication. Calculate the dimensions and specifications of gear and pinion Design the pinion and gear shaft. Analyse the pinion and gear shaft using SolidWorks and compare the results with your results from analytical method. Make a tabular summary of your results. Based on the given data and the reactions found, select bearings for each of the supports. You will need to choose an appropriate load application factor, AF, from design tables. Draw all individual components and an assembly of the gear box in 2D. Draw a scaled drawing (3D model) of the entire system using SolidWorks. You will have to show all elements of the gearbox including its housing. Prepare a word-processed report and submitted via Moodle. All sketches/drawing should be embedded in the report.
