What Does Grendel Look Like?
Introduction: Grendel is considered the main and most famous villain in the epic poem Beowulf, but very
little description of him is given.
Assignment: On your own, find 10 quotes from Beowulf (lines 1-103 and 285-410) that contain description
of Grendel. Write them below. Beside the description, write the line numbers and what you think that would
make him look like (Hrothgar fears Grendel will “chew their bones”: what kind of teeth would that give him?).
After you find 10 descriptions, draw a picture of Grendel based on your findings. The final picture must be
colored for full credit.
