Associated Student Government: Sean Dadashi Accreditation requires the mission statement be reviewed on an annual basis. Discussion followed. Technology: Curt Childress The soccer games scheduled for Monday, October 22, have been postponed, along with the tailgate activities, to Monday, October 29; men’s game at 3:00 and women’s game at 6:00 p.m. Latino Heritage Month activities in Strenger Plaza, Oct 31 and Nov 1 Although attendance has been low due to fires, should meet target. Lighting has been installed in the outside seating area. Agreement has been reached with a business across the street to provide an additional 45 spaces for parking. Now working on how to get students safely across the street. No report. Next meeting is Tuesday, November 6. a. b. 5. President Vazquez distributed the latest Incident Report regarding the Santiago fires, including a map with the approximate burn area. AlertU system is being researched – it is a voluntary text message system that would be used to alert students, staff and faculty. Working with OUSD to promote Community Science Night, Friday, November 6. Next issue of Career Focus magazine, January 2008, will highlight water and public works. No report. Security officers need updates at shift changes to be informed for student/staff questions. Motion to accept mission statement with revision as suggested, with amendment to review again next year (Wilson/Edwards) passed unanimously. 6. Budget/Facilities/Safety/Admin Services: Juan Vazquez 7. Curriculum and Instruction Committee: Laura Wirtz Discussion to reorganize representation on SCC Curriculum and Instruction Council by division. Item on Academic Senate agenda. 8. Academic Affairs: John Hernandez Two faculty will receive additional assignments to cover the Basic Skills Initiative. 9. Student Success Committee/Student Services: John Hernandez a. b. c. 10. Plans were shared with the board for the new gymnasium (Austin Co.) Approval by DSA to move ahead with maintenance and operations building. d. Developed agreement with wireless carrier for antennae pole installation on soccer field. Student Services faculty and staff met two weeks ago – very productive. New Hawks Scholarship deadline has been extended to November 1 Robert Waldren has been offered the position of Student Services Coordinator for the Transfer Center. d. Outreach has initiated a Middle School outreach program. Parent workshops have been arranged with Portola, McPherson and Yorba Middle Schools. e. Additional spaces on campus have been identified for “Smoke Free Area” signage, to encourage students not to smoke in those areas. b. Update on Basic Skills Initiative will be provided at next College Council meeting. Discussion is continuing regarding textbook costs for students and alternatives. SCC and SAC Academic Senates agreed on a one-year limit for grade change requests. A policy is being written by the Senate and will be brought to ASG and the college President for consideration. Need to determine where the item will be printed after appropriate approvals are received (possibly Student Handbook). Regarding the $30 million funding for non-credit: trying to work through more detailed evidence of programs offered to our students. Department of Finance wants to see proof of how this extra money is leading to jobs and skills for our students that would not be reached without the additional dollars.
