CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY TECHNICIAN I, TECHNICAL SERVICES

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Dean, Academic Information Services and the Coordinator, Library

Operations, provide for the acquisition and cataloging of library materials in addition to special projects as assigned by the Technical Services Librarian.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Library Technician I classification is the entry-level classification in this series. Incumbents are assigned technical duties related to acquisition, processing, and implementation of RFID security, and inventory; they operate computers and provide work direction to student workers and campus aides.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Utilize library client/server software with integrated cataloging, serials, academic reserve and circulation modules; process circulating and non-circulating materials according to established procedures. (E)

2. Receive, reconcile, and verify vendor orders for all new library material; perform quality control for all new and updated library material processing. (E)

3. Pre-paste all new library materials; create and process spine labels; label, process, and security tag library material in a variety of formats; encode RFID security tags. (E)

4. Perform copy cataloging tasks associated with OCLC; edit MARC bibliographic records; assign ANSCR call numbers to compact disc musical sound recordings. (E)

5 Perform processing task associated with PromptCat; download bibliographic records for leased books and audio books on compact discs. (E)

6. Apply authority control for Library of Congress subject headings. (E)

7. Search, match, edit and attach item numbers to catalog records to include addition, deletion and modification of information.

8. Reconcile library material withdrawal reports and delete OCLC holdings. (E)

9. Edit new book list report; maintain library gift book information and track expenditures.

10. Maintain close-captioned video project spread sheet; update existing bibliographic records.

Prepare other records and reports as directed; distribute information as necessary. (E)

11. Operate, maintain and provide instruction for equipment and machines.

12. Provide work direction to student workers and campus aides.

13. Perform a variety of clerical duties including word processing, scanning, filing and duplicating.

14. Participate in the repair and archiving of a variety of library material; re-order Technical

Supplies as needed and notify appropriate personnel of receipt as necessary.

15. Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Library of Congress Classification System.

Library policies and procedures.

ANSCR Classification system.

AACRS cataloging rules.

MARC 21 bibliographic record structure.

OCLC bibliographic database.

Current SirsiDynix software

Microsoft Office Suite software; Word, Excel, Outlook

RFID technology

Current office practices, procedures and equipment.

Filing and recordkeeping techniques.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Telephone techniques and etiquette.

ABILITY TO:

Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Provide general assistance and information to library and college staff and faculty.

Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer and appropriate software.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Train and provide work direction to others.

Accurately maintain records and prepare reports.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and experience equivalent to an Associate degree and one year of closely related work experience.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Subject to frequent bending; lifting, pushing, climbing and/or carrying of light to moderately heavy materials weighing up to 35 pounds; moderate to heavy repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus occasionally, as-needed to conduct district business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other individuals from diverse backgrounds or to work alone; ability to have appropriate interactions and communications personally, by phone and/or in writing with students, staff and faculty on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Primarily works in library environment; occasional to frequent contact with and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone or email; may be required to work at any district location during day and/or evening hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis .
