Temporary Cataloging Assistant (Temporary Assignment) Library Summary Reporting to the Cataloging Specialist (and in the absence of such to the Library Director), the incumbent is responsible for producing copy cataloging for materials added to the Library collection and for materials needing reclassification. Works closely with the Collections Services team, especially the Librarian for Data Management and Integrity in performing these tasks. This position serves in the Library, a component of the Information Resources division, which also includes Information Technology Services and the Center for Digital Liberal Arts departments. Reporting lines and duties for staff are subject to change, which means that all staff will need to be able to adjust creatively and flexibly to a changing work environment. Essential Functions Using knowledge of bibliographic description and MARC record format, verifies that preliminary OCLC records match the material in hand. Makes final editing of OCLC monograph/serial records, following the specifications of the USMARC code set, RDA, AACR2 Rev.Ed., Occidental College Library policy, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations. Orders edited OCLC records for loading into the library system. Resolves cataloging problems and database errors as identified by library staff/students/faculty, referring issues to other staff as needed. Reclassifies materials as needed, applying copy cataloging policy and guidelines. Fully catalogs materials with existing minimal records. Inputs revised/new records into OASys database. Maintenance of catalog database, including loading bibliographic and authority records as needed. As a member of the collection services team, participates as needed in the collective work to ensure that all services are met in a timely manner. Supervises student assistants. Assist with inventory control and ordering of supplies and equipment. Qualifications Requires Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of library experience or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates strong knowledge of and experience with relevant library services, practices, and technologies in an academic library setting. Requires familiarity with materials cataloging and description practices and data standards using library and other systems. Proficiency with productivity software and data gathering, and the ability to organize information, write reports, and keep statistical records. Must be able to work effectively within standardized and ad hoc workflows, to learn and apply detailed policies and data standards, and to plan and execute projects; must possess good oral and written communication skills for working with staff and with vendors. The individual in this position must be a self-starter who can work effectively as part of a team.
