CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL RELATIONS/DIVERSITY OUTREACH

COORDINATOR

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Dean, Admissions and Student Support, coordinate all school relations and outreach activities for MiraCosta College. Monitor budget; facilitate and maintain relations with area school district and college personnel; develop special outreach programs and partnerships targeting underrepresented K-12 and adult student populations.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Establish working relationships with ethnically diverse leaders of community organizations by attending their community meetings, networking and partnering in mutually beneficial activities. (E)

2. Initiate and maintain positive relations with feeder high schools, middle and elementary school administrators, counselors, and faculty and with local businesses, public agencies and community groups that have an interest in partnering with education. (E)

3. Supervise and evaluate the outreach activities of the Student Services Specialist and student ambassadors. Provide input to the evaluation of the Secretary II. (E)

4. Coordinate and oversee the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of the student ambassadors. (E)

5. Administer the department budget.

6. Coordinate and organize on- and off-campus outreach efforts which target diverse students including developing programs and curriculum information services for AVID

(Advancement Via Individual Determination), Migrant Education, GEAR UP (Gaining Early

Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), ESL/bilingual classes and other programs for underrepresented and educationally disadvantaged students at local high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. (E)

7. Coordinate placement testing, orientation and advisement programs for district high school seniors as part of the on-campus student success and student support program. (E)

8. Design and deliver oral presentations and workshops for high school, middle school and elementary school programs and community groups. Provide college curricular and student services information to high school staff, students and parents. (E)

9. Organize and coordinate college fairs in cooperation with neighboring college/university outreach offices. Attend college fairs as a representative of the district.

10. Coordinate college representation at community events including scheduling and site supervision of district personnel.

12. Compile statistics and conduct research to evaluate and report on program effectiveness.

13. Maintain a resource library of diversity information.

14. Coordinate publication of departmental brochures, newsletters, and other informational material related to school relations and diversity outreach. (E)

15. Plan and carry out annual events that bring high school counselors, administrators, and faculty to the campus. (E)

16. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree, one year of directly related experience, and one year of closely related experience in a college student services area.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver license.

SCHOOL RELATIONS/DIVERSITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Secretary II, Student Services Specialist, Student Ambassadors, and other student workers.

CONTACTS:

Administrators, faculty, staff, culturally diverse individuals, students, other department personnel,

3 public, vendors, parents.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Moderate physical activity including standing, walking, bending and stooping; regular light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications in person, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in an office environment and also frequently conducts business at community organizations and local schools. Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. Will work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours and weekends.

Occasional local travel may be requested.
