Contract Status:
This apprenticeship is available from September 2016 and will be
offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of four years.
Hours of Work:
36¼ hours per week, 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm Mon-Thurs,
8.30am-4.25pm Fri.
Location: Faculty of Engineering, L2 Building, University Of Nottingham, University Park,
Nottingham. NG7 2RD
Reporting to: Senior Technical Manager
Purpose of the New Role: To train as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice Technician within
the Faculty of Engineering, providing technical support to researchers, students and academic
staff within the University. Based within The Precision Manufacturing Centre, the role will gain
a broad understanding of the various engineering subjects and processes available including
both manual and CNC turning and milling, fitting, grinding, Computer Aided Design and up to
5 Axis CNC programming. Training will progress across all skill areas, while working at all times
under the supervision of engineering technicians. The role will attend suitable day release
courses at a local training establishment.

Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of engineering processes
and skill, while under the instruction of skilled engineering technicians.

Demonstrating learned skills and processes as the training period progresses.

Undertake and complete suitable college courses throughout the training
period with a view to completing a suitable level 4 (HNC) qualification.

Learn, understand and demonstrate the importance of the University’s Health
& Safety policy

Creating and maintaining a training log book over the duration of the
apprenticeship period to record skills learned and projects worked on.

6.
Maintenance and general housekeeping of workshop and laboratory areas.

Qualifications/
Education
Essential
5 GCSE’s including English, Maths, and
a Science, grades A to C
Desirable
Five GCSEs (or equivalent) at
Grades A – B, to include
Mathematics,

Skills/Training
Good level of practical ability
General computer skills.
Experience
Practical school level Technology work
within a workshop environment.
Basic understanding of
engineering drawings.
