The Purpose of the Role:

This is a training role and will provide support to the smooth day to day running of the

School Animal Facilities and Clinical Laboratories. The School is top-rated for both teaching and research and this role offers the opportunity to be involved and gain experience in a variety of technical settings at the UK’s leading Veterinary School.

Main Responsibilities:

% time per year

40% 1 Husbandry and care of school small holding animals. Duties to include routine feeding, cleaning out and carrying out daily health checks working under the supervision/direction of senior colleagues.

1 Support the running of the school livery yard including the routine husbandry and care of the school horse.

3 Support the running the school kennels and cattery. Duties to include exercise of dogs and the general house-keeping of the facilities.

3 Maintenance of the school animal facilities including the general cleaning of facilities, laundry of PPE and restocking of consumables and feed stuff.

5 Support practical teaching through the provision of animal handling expertise.

 Minimum of a good standard of education evidenced by up to 5

GCSEs (grade c and above) or equivalent, demonstrating numeracy and literacy , with potential for further study where appropriate

 Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students

 Good manual dexterity

Desirable

 Experience of working with various animal species

Other  Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team

Decision Making

i) taken independently by the role holder;

Implementing safety and standard operational procedures

ii) taken in collaboration with others;

Organisation of space and resources within the relevant work area.

iii) referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder.

Scope of the Role

The role is a training role as an animal care technician within the School of Veterinary

Medicine and Science.
