Call to Order
Roll Call and introductions
Approval of minutes from June
a. Jamie moved, Teresa seconded, all in favor - approved
CED collaboration (Christine Lemley)
a. CED has proposed an intersectional collaboration between all of the
commissions around reinstituting the diversity workshop series. The first
workshop entitled “Women of Color in the Academy” will be sponsored by CED
and includes Maori scholar Hine Waitere and NAU Women and Gender Studies
Sheila Nair. The proposal calls for a continuation of the series in the spring with
each commission facilitating a particular month including speakers and topic.
b. Co-planning for spring will begin at the end of August. The co-chairs of each
commission and anyone else from the respective commissions are invited to join
the planning group.
c. The current format idea is to have 3-4 panelists speak for 15 minutes each then
have a roundtable discussion and come back as a group to discuss. Each
workshop will need to have a moderator.
d. Concerns about budget and framing of topics were discussed. To keep costs
down and to highlight the work of NAU researchers, we need to see who is
available on campus instead of bringing speakers in from elsewhere. How will
this series be framed? Matt M. suggested putting the panels together then pose
a question and have each member of the panel answer. So the theme of the
question will drive the discussion not necessarily the members of the panel.
e. Christine will send out a Doodle poll to find a time to begin planning.
Memo to new provost
a. Discussion of reinforcing the points raised when we invite Dr. Coleman to a
meeting. Need to have concrete requests.
CDAD at the Society of Disability Studies (SDS) (Matthew Wangeman)
a. CDAD is unique and other universities are interested in what we do. Matthew
would like to see us highlight our approach. Discussion of CDAD presenting at
SDS, everyone was in favor of creating a panel/presentation. Jamie suggested we
model it on the presentation he, David and Chris gave at AHEAD a few years ago.
