1. Roll call
 Introductions
 24 commissioners present. 1 invited guest: President Cheng
 March minutes approved
2. Memo to Jennus Burton
 Memo was sent to Jennus Burton, Vice President for Finance and
Administration seeking funding support from the university administration
to adopt the new, active International Symbol of Access (ISA) in all new
buildings and parking spaces
 No feedback from Jennus yet
 It will be good to adopt the active symbol uniformly on campus. Symbol
has already been used on parking spaces on campus
 Mike Mazur:
o CDAD voted in support of adoption of the active ISA campus
parking spaces
o Some municipalities around the country have adopted the active
symbol such as Phoenix and New York City
3. NAU 4 All Scavenger Hunt
 Event was successful
 The team visited Starbucks, SBS West, Forestry, Franke College of
Business- South Campus
 Summer projects related to the scavenger hunt: reworking of sidewalk
between the library and Eastburn
4. Announcements
 Matt W was elected to be one of the co-chairs for the Society for Disability
Studies conference in June 2016. Matt encourages CDAD to participate in
the conference
 Transit by Beaver will be closed for the summer to re-wire water
connections. Buses will use San Francisco
 Commencement volunteers needed. Contact Office of Affirmative Action
 Robert Young who founded NAU 4 All is graduating. Congratulations to
Robert!
 TASH @NAU thanks CDAD for being awarded the CDAD Leadership
award

5. Discussion with President Cheng
 Opening remarks: The President appreciates all the things CDAD is doing
to advance diversity on campus.

Questions:
1. How do you view the role of the CDAD in supporting the Office of the
President?
o CDAD has an advisory role
o President Cheng wants CDAD to continue to be proactive than
reactive
2. What is your experience with creating and/or supporting a physically,
informationally, and attitudinally inclusive campus?
o Every institution is different
o Disability as part of diversity is relatively new at NAU. But
physical space issues are already being tackled
3. How do you see disability as a part of diversity?
o Disability issues in curriculum
o Continue to work on integrating disability in curriculum
4. How could you see your office supporting the mapping project
initiative?
o Original assessment budget was about $ 1million but project was cut
into phases
o Pres Cheng sees opportunities for money: draw in on various
interests, incorporate accessibility to other existing projects.
o Slice the project into years so that we are not trying to do everything
in one fiscal year
5. Disability minor institutionalization
o Possible home for the minor: College of Ed, SBS, Health Sciences?
o NAU has the only Disability minor in Arizona. Minor was started 5
years ago and it has 95 students currently

a. Proactive culture on campus
b. How to move forward with budget constraints
