TEAM REPORTS
Associated Students Organization – Ms. Jennifer Apple
The Memorial Service held Tuesday, September 18, 2001 was a great success as students, faculty and staff joined together. The program included speeches by ASO President Joshua
Lawson, Torrance Mayor Dee Hardison, Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor Marilyn Lyon, and
Rev. Fred Bradford of Morningstar Non-Denominational Church. There was also a performance by the El Camino College Chorale. Two large banners were signed and sent to a memorial for the victims in New York.
The Associated Student Organization has a full senate, appointing two commissioners last week.
Academic Affairs - Dr. Nadine I. Hata
The students did a good job organizing the memorial service. A student participated in the
College Cirriculum Retreat and there is now student representation at Area Council.
Police Officers Association - Ms. Jan Caldwell
There have numerous car burglaries on campus, however they are slowing down a bit.
There have been no altercations as a result of the terrorist attack.
October is Crime Prevention month. Activities will occur on Thursdays. Some activities planned are: 1) Child safety, seats, and fingerprinting at the Child Development Center; 2)
Presentation by Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center in the Cafeteria Alondra Room; 3)
Highway Patrol demonstration on drunk driving; 4) Vehicle safety and security. The vehicle safety content is still in development and Ms. Caldwell welcomes any suggestions.
AFT, Local 1388 - Mr. Bernie Rang
The AFT has a tentative agreement with the El Camino Community College District on the working conditions that will be affected by the Compressed Calendar. They are still negotiating on $950M for part time equity.
Some faculty felt a statement should have been issued as to what would be appropriate for class room discussions following the terrorist attacks.
President Fallo
1.
On Tuesday, September 11 th
, the main concern was whether to continue classes or not.
A decision was made to continue classes as normal. We were advised through emergency broadcast to keep all operations up and business as usual. An editorial in the
Daily Breeze supported keeping students in class. California State Universities were closed under the direction of the Governor.
At 3:00 p.m. September 17, 2001 we met with Mr. Joshua Lawson to decide on how to conduct the memorial ceremony. The Daily Breeze page B-1 had a picture of El Camino
College students signing one of the banners to be sent to New York.
We have learned a lot about communication in an emergency environment. In the future the President’s Newsletters will be sent electronically, by hard copy, and one shall be posted in each division. There will be no further newsletters addressing this issue unless something warrants it. The next newsletter topic will be P4E.
2.
President Fallo spoke of the unsuccessful State Education Bond.
3.
President Fallo also noted a need for long-term financing for El Camino Community
College District; an item may be included on the October board agenda to discuss a bond campaign.
4.
By the end of this week we should have a final draft of the final draft of the
Accreditation Self-Study. All College Council members are asked to review the rough draft of the proposed agendas for the 2002 Self Study provided by Barbara Perez and
Tom Lew. This item will be discussed at the next College Council meeting.
5.
Proposed Vision Statement: El Camino College will be the College of choice for successful student learning, caring student services and open access. We, the employees, will work together to create an environment which emphasizes respect, integrity, people and excellence. Our college will be a leader in accountability among community colleges.
6.
Operations & Logistics/Workplan: This item will be brought back next week when regular College Council members are in attendance.
7.
Calendar issues and effects will be reviewed once we go into compressed calendar. A lot of planning is going into effect now and the objective is to get that schedule completed.

7335: Health Examinations
