El Camino Community College District Safety and Health Committee Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Present: Adrian Amjadi, Michael Blada, Elizabeth Fernandez, Christie Killduff, Carl Turano and Valerie Wagner (Recorder). Absent: Rocky Bonura and Janice Caldwell. A. Call to Order: Valerie Wagner called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. 1. Minutes: Minutes of May 23, 2012 were approved. 2. Workers’ Compensation: Valerie Wagner reported that there were three injuries for the month of May, which resulted in a total of forty-eight days of lost time from work and there was also one injury for the month of June that resulted in four days of lost time. 3. Safety and Health Office: Valerie Wagner reported that the Office of Safety and Health has scheduled online safety training for September 7th for Night Custodians. 4. Facilities Work Order Report: Nothing to report since Michael Blada is absent from today’s meeting. 5. Old Business: Art Department – Adrian Amjadi reported that the clean up within his department has been completed. 6. Division Safety Reports: Natural Sciences – Christie Killduff reported that Darrell Johns and Steven Duzich met with Jean Shankweiler and suggested that an exhaust fan should be installed inside the “cat” refrigerator and that the HVAC crew was not comfortable with repairing the refrigerator at this time due to the fumes. Valerie Wagner commented that the solution that the cat specimens are stored in does not contain formaldehyde. The HVAC crew should wear the proper equipment such as a respirator and goggles when working in this environment in order to reduced discomfort caused by the fumes. The issue was also discussed in a meeting that Rocky Bonura had with Tom Brown and Rocky Bonura determined that since there was no formaldehyde in the preservative solution, the job of repairing the refrigerator could be safely performed by the HVAC personnel wearing a respirator and goggles. SAFETY AND HEALTH COMMITTEE Minutes of July 25, 2012 Page 2 of 2 Art Department – Adrian Amjadi reported that the fracture toward the base of the bronze sculpture located in the southeast courtyard of the Art Department has been repaired. I have found a company that I can order the fans to help eliminate the ventilation problem in the Print Making room and will be emailing the information to Rocky Bonura for him to take a look at. I have also ordered emergency LED lights that the instructors can keep at their station just in case we experience an electrical outage. Connie Fitzsimons is very interested in the “Waste Rag” service and would like to see if this is something that we can pay for out of our Division budget. I am hesitant about having the funds come out of our budget since it would be a contract and I am afraid that the Fine Arts division funds would not be able to cover the service. 7. Next Meeting: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., 2nd Floor of Bookstore Building, Room 253.
