Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in the viticulture
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to
identify and monitor a variety of grapevine disorders and
causes of damage, and recommend and implement
preventative or corrective action. Consultation with their
manager would be expected. They are likely to supervise
others in the implementation process.

Explanatory notes

The Primary Industry Training Organisation acknowledges the assistance provided
by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) in permitting their competency
unit to be used as the basis for this unit standard. This unit standard is based on the
unit of competency FDFWGGVDDA, Monitor and control vine disorders and damage.

Workplace procedures refers to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures
for the worksite and equipment.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992 and its subsequent amendments. Licensing
requirements relevant to this unit standard include, but are not limited to, the class of
driver licence appropriate to the vehicle used.

Vine disorders may include any form of damage or deficiency caused by physical,
environmental, biological or chemical agents eg vermin, diseases, pests, weeds,
fungi, nutrient deficiency.

Equipment will vary according to the techniques adopted.

Information systems may be paper or electronic based.

Work may involve exposure to chemical, dangerous, or hazardous substances.
Safety procedures are observed in accordance with NZS 8409:2004 Management of

Outcome 1
Monitor grapevine health.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Vineyard is monitored according to workplace procedures.
1.2
Vine disorders and pest/vermin presence are recognised by their signs and
symptoms.
1.3
Causal agent is identified.
1.4
Appropriate control activities are identified and recommended.
Outcome 2
Implement control measures.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Equipment is operated according to workplace procedures, without causing
damage to vines, equipment and property structures.
2.2
Agreed control measures are implemented according to instructions.
Range
control or eradication measures include growth regulants,
nutrients, hormones, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and other
chemicals, baits, traps, ripping, fumigation, guns, guards, fencing,
gas guns, scaring devices.
Outcome 3
Evaluate the effectiveness of control measures.

Vineyard is monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

Evidence requirements
4.1
Workplace information is recorded and/or stored according to workplace
procedures.
Range
may include standard operating procedures, specifications,
production schedules/instructions, work notes, Material Safety
Data Sheets, manufacturers’ instructions, verbal direction from
manager, supervisor or senior operator.
