Purpose
This unit standard is for people involved in the care and maintenance of
amenity turf areas that are not intended for sports turf use.
People credited with this unit standard are able to care for turf maintenance
tools and small equipment and use them to complete amenity turf
maintenance work to enterprise standards.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Use tools and small equipment to complete amenity turf maintenance work.
Performance criteria
1.1
Tools and/or equipment selected and procedures used to prune tree and shrub
material impeding turf maintenance activities ensure work is completed in
accordance with enterprise standards.
Range
1.2
Tools and/or equipment selected and procedures used to prepare turf edges for
mowing, or to cut rough grass areas, ensure work is completed in accordance
with enterprise standards.
Range
1.3
at least three tools or pieces of equipment from the following –
rotary hoe, fork, roller, levelling screed, seed broadcaster,
sprigger, temporary fence standard driver, mall or mallet, line
markers, hole cutters, pluggers.
Tools and/or equipment selected and procedures used to clean up after turf
maintenance ensure work is completed in accordance with enterprise
standards.
Range
1.5
at least three tools or pieces of equipment from the following –
weed eaters with line or blade, edgers, rotary mower, reel mower,
edge shears.
Tools and/or equipment selected and procedures used to perform general
maintenance tasks on turf areas ensure work is completed in accordance with
enterprise standards.
Range
1.4
at least three tools or pieces of equipment from the following –
handsaws, loppers, long pruners, secateurs, hedge clippers.
at least three tools or pieces of equipment from the following –
broom, shovel, leaf/grass vacuum or blower, rake, fork.
Work is completed in accordance with health and safety requirements and
without damage to the tools or equipment selected.
Element 2
Care for tools and small equipment used in amenity turf maintenance work.
Performance criteria
2.1
Techniques applied in the use of tools and operation of equipment minimises
damage to the tools and equipment.

2.2
Procedures used to care for tools and equipment after use maximise their
working life and efficiency.
Range
procedures include but are not limited to – storing and placement
while not in use, transporting, cleaning, adjusting, lubricating,
sharpening.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
