NZQA Expiring unit standard 2259 version 7 Page 1 of 4 Title Undertake pre-make ready for reel-fed printing (letterpress, flexographic and gravure processes) Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available; prepare and handle substrates for reel-fed printing in accordance with workplace practices; confirm image carriers meet production requirements; use inks and ink additives to meet job specifications; and determine run sequence and number of printing units required. Classification Printing > Printing - Reel-Fed Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Prerequisites: Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in the printing and graphic pre-press industries; Unit 20667, Demonstrate trade knowledge for reelfed printing; and Unit 16526, Demonstrate knowledge of substrates used on reel-fed presses; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. 2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available. Evidence requirements Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 2259 version 7 Page 2 of 4 1.1 Job documentation is checked to ensure that all specifications for the process being undertaken are complete and any discrepancies are reported in accordance with workplace practices. 1.2 Components required for the job are checked against job documentation and their availability confirmed. Range 1.3 any of the following to meet job requirements – plates and/or cylinders, job sample or layout, ink, substrates, quantity, special instructions, adhesive (permanent, removable, freezer). Availability of equipment, as determined by the job specifications, is confirmed. Outcome 2 Prepare and handle substrates for reel-fed printing in accordance with workplace practices. Range any of the following as required to meet the production requirements – paper, plastic film, foil, metallised film. Evidence requirements 2.1 Substrate characteristics which are likely to cause printing problems are identified. Range substrate characteristics (dependent on the substrate used) include – grammage, calliper, smoothness, opacity, transparency, coatings, absorbency, pH, strength, colour, finish, receptivity, grain direction, laser printer compatibility, slip treatment, moisture content. 2.2 Substrate is confirmed as meeting the requirements of the job specifications. 2.3 Substrate quantity, including overs, is calculated and quantity issued is confirmed against job specifications. 2.4 Substrates are conditioned as necessary to achieve smooth running on the press. 2.5 Acceptance and retention properties of non-absorbent substrates are checked and problems are solved or reported in accordance with workplace practices. 2.6 Damaged, flawed and substandard reels are repaired if useable or rejected in accordance with workplace practice. 2.7 Handling and storage of substrates are carried out in accordance with workplace practice. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 (dependent on substrate being used to meet requirements of the job specifications) New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 2259 version 7 Page 3 of 4 handling – clean working environment, clean hands, transporting methods, stacking, avoidance of damage to substrate, avoidance of personal injury; storage – light, temperature, air flow control, relative humidity, age (stock rotation), ease of access, identification of stock, ‘return to stock’ product is clearly marked, reject stock. Outcome 3 Confirm image carriers meet production requirements. Range plates, plate cylinders or sleeves. Evidence requirements 3.1 Image carriers are checked for suitability for press requirements. 3.2 Image carriers are checked against proof for image defects. Range missing images, unwanted images, position of image, orientation of image. Outcome 4 Use inks and ink additives to meet job specifications. Evidence requirements 4.1 Inks required to meet job specifications are identified and used. Range 4.2 Ink quantities required for the job are calculated in accordance with workplace practices. Range 4.3 may include but is not limited to – drying properties, transparency, colourfastness, scuff, odour free, bleed problems, substrate, gloss, colour, opacity, overprint finish, laser printer compatibility, toxicity, foil stamping. historical, formula. Ink additives are identified, selected and used to ensure quality of print meets job requirements. Range any of – solvents, reducers, extenders, antifoams. Outcome 5 Determine run sequence and number of printing units required. Evidence requirements 5.1 Run sequence is established to meet the requirements of the job specifications.
