Explanatory notes 1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. 2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace. 3 All production tasks assessed against this unit standard are to be carried out under the direction of the press operator. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 16523 version 5 Page 2 of 5 Evidence requirements 1.1 Machine start up, shut down and emergency procedures in the workplace are explained. 1.2 Hazard control measures, as circulated by the company, are described and followed. 1.3 Hazards or potential hazards in the workplace are identified and reported in accordance with workplace practices. Outcome 2 Check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available. Evidence requirements 2.1 Job documentation is checked to ensure that all specifications for the process being undertaken are complete and any discrepancies are reported in accordance with workplace practices. 2.2 Components required for the job are checked against the job documentation and confirmed with the press operator. Range 2.3 any of the following to meet job requirements – plates, job sample or layout, ink, substrates, quantity, special instructions, adhesive (permanent, removable, freezer). Availability of equipment, as advised by the press operator, is confirmed. Outcome 3 Prepare and handle substrates for reel-fed printing. Range any of the following to meet production requirements – paper, plastic film, foil, metallised film. Evidence requirements 3.1 Characteristics of substrates used on reel-fed presses are identified. Range 3.2 grammage, calliper, width. Handling of substrates is carried out in accordance with press operator’s instructions. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 may include but is not limited to – clean working environment, clean hands, transporting methods, stacking, working side, avoidance of damage to substrate, affinity to ink, avoidance of personal injury. Outcome 4 Identify and use chemicals required for offset damping systems. Evidence requirements 4.1 Fountain additives are identified. Range water, fountain concentrate, alcohol or alcohol substitutes, driers, water treatment agents. 4.2 Fountain concentrate is measured and diluted in accordance with press operator’s instructions. 4.3 Fountain solution is checked for correct pH and/or conductivity reading and then confirmed with the press operator. Outcome 5 Assist in make ready and printing tasks to ensure that job requirements are met. Evidence requirements 5.1 Plates are confirmed with the press operator as being correct for the job before proceeding to secure in the press. 5.2 Plates are loaded and secured in the press in accordance with press operator’s instructions. 5.3 Inking system on the press being operated is explained in terms of its operation. 5.4 Ink is added to the ducts and/or reservoirs in the correct amount in accordance with workplace practices, ensuring colour consistency of job is achieved. Outcome 6 Carry out post press tasks. Evidence requirements 6.1 Job documentation is completed in accordance with workplace practices. Range 6.2 may include but is not limited to – job sheets, time sheets, electronic data storage, quality forms. Post press tasks are carried out as required by the job documentation and in accordance with workplace practices. Range 6.3 Printed substrate is prepared for forwarding to the next production process as instructed by the press operator. 6.4 Waste control procedures are followed in accordance with workplace practices, local body and product requirements.
