People credited with this unit standard are, in the signmaking workplace, able to follow: personal safety practices, electrical safety procedures, and fire safety practices. Classification Graphic Arts > Signmaking Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters. 2 Reference to company policy means any policies, procedures, and requirements of the company involved, and the ethical codes of relevant professional management. Range includes but is not limited to – poor visibility, electricity, poor ventilation, wet surfaces, noise, heat, manual handling. 1.2 Personal safety equipment is worn and used at all times when exposed to hazardous operations. 1.3 Location of first aid equipment, and accident procedures are identified as specified in the workplace. Range includes but is not limited to – floors, above floor storage areas, work tops. 1.5 Safe practices for handling, lifting and stacking are applied at all times. 1.6 Tools and equipment are maintained in safe condition at all times. 1.7 Faulty equipment is reported as required by company policy. 1.8 Emergency and evacuation procedures applicable to the workplace are described. Outcome 2 Follow electrical safety procedures in the signmaking workplace. Evidence requirements 2.1 Electrical leads, transformers, and equipment are used and maintained in good working order at all times. 2.2 Faulty electrical equipment is reported and rendered non-operational according to company policy. 2.3 Emergency stop buttons and electrical safety devices are located, checked, and operated following procedures specified in the operating manuals and the company policy. 2.4 All electrical equipment is operated within safe operating loads according to manufacturer's instructions. 2.5 Sheathing of overhead power lines which may represent a hazard is arranged prior to on-site work being carried out. Outcome 3 This unit standard is expiring Follow fire safety practices in the signmaking workplace. Evidence requirements 3.1 Location and operation procedures for fire extinguishers in the workplace are described. 3.2 Combustible materials are labelled, stored, handled, and used according to manufacturer's instructions and company policy. 3.3 Fire evacuation procedures laid down in the workplace are described.
