This unit standard is for experienced people wishing to develop
their technical skills in leather manufacture.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of miscellaneous tanning agents used in leather
manufacture; analyse the mechanisms of miscellaneous
tannages; analyse miscellaneous tannage practices; and
analyse miscellaneous tanned leather characteristics.

Mechanisms of miscellaneous tannages are analysed in terms of the interaction
of the reagent with the skin system.
evidence is required of two of the following – aldehyde, cod oil,
syntan, zirconium.

Miscellaneous tannages are analysed in terms of process techniques and
conditions used in the tannery.

Oil tannage process used to produce finished chamois leather from full
substance pickled sheep pelts are analysed in terms of process techniques and
conditions used in the tannery.

Analyse miscellaneous tanned leather characteristics.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Characteristics that different miscellaneous tannages impart to finished leathers
are analysed in terms of their suitability for different purposes.
evidence is required of three of the following – aldehyde,
oxazolidine, THPS, cod oil, syntan, aluminium, zirconium.
